Did you see apple shares under David always watches apple shares apple shares this is the do we got this is -- this is the apple -- It is hitting a new all time high because of -- -- fans lined up worldwide to get their hands.
They're little -- on the brand new iPhone 5.
You know when you hold this -- can we come back into the into the studio here -- show this because it really is extraordinarily.
Thin I mean it's it's 20% thinner.
You you know your hands are so tactile that you can really feel the difference immediately in fact it's also.
20% -- and it does feel a lot -- but not all fans are cheering for this latest devices apple faces a huge mess over its new -- act.
Joining us now is Adam Lashinsky author of inside apple.
And again Adam had just heard for the moment focusing on the have to the -- -- it almost feels like a -- mock up rather than the real thing because you're so used to something.
That's 20% heavier.
And of course it's it's it's nicely thinned out but.
Bottom line is the new -- dealing with maps is causing a lot of -- -- that forced people to delayed purchasing this thing.
Until they straighten that out.
Well I think geared David your your visual of.
The people waiting in line really answers the question first on -- -- this technologists will tell you what they have accomplished is just an extraordinary -- to be able to essentially do what the last phone could do in more.
But to put in that in that tiny light and stretched packages.
Is you know is -- moving mountains in the technology world.
And I seen quite a few of these before the tide could always turn for now I think this maps fiasco.
Is probably a tempest and a teapot people loved to complain.
About the one thing they don't like about apple products and then they go up and by want -- by one for their sister in their and their cousin.
As well apple will fix this -- and prove it Google Maps will eventually get on to the iPhone and it's in a standalone app.
This will blow over -- be a black guy not out.
Part of me just interrupt -- -- it was on our screen but it was audit Indiana University as it pertains when it comes to directions to the apple.
Map and then to the right is the Google apps so much more -- coming flip it over to Martha's Vineyard we decided to to do one of Martha's Vineyard you can see what Google.
Where the actual Parkland is -- there's much more detail.
These two companies how how.
Sort of hateful are they toward each other -- -- -- a pretty decent relationship didn't -- but now what's so competitive.
They did in an apple has completely screwed up this round as your showing mapping is -- really really difficult you know the world's a messy place it changes a lot.
And to the people have been doing online mapping for longer have a better handle on -- and the people who have been doing -- first shorter period of time and the latter there.
What would be apple isn't any this is they armed.
A major potential driver of advertising.
And dot apple is has been so furious with -- Google.
That this is 144.
Cop for what they perceive this copying the iPhone and android phones.
That this is one of the areas that apple targeted.
That is a potentially big profit center for Google.
And clearly they didn't get it right.
All right the two main competitors that I can see right now for small Blackberry rim of course having a terrible day today as they have their -- overseas.
So let's put blackberries -- is that what about the Samsung galaxy because they are -- bigger -- it's even bigger than than the new larger size apple.
And they have better wraps of course at least in terms of the mapping is concerned so.
It does it is -- -- is apples to face any real competition seriously from Samsung.
Sure.
-- because it didn't Samsung it follows a more traditional strategy of having multiple phones instead of just one or in the case of apple to.
Sizes -- form factors as as the nerds like to say so yes absolutely apple is facing competition from Samsung what I would point out however.
Is that for a ridiculously long period of time apple essentially had the field to itself.
That's not the case anymore so you can look at that Bennett cup half full our cup half empty.
Perspective I think apple still has the potential to.
Be the leader to make a ton of money to expand -- new countries and -- -- but they are going to have to share the stage with Samsung and maybe.
Microsoft Nokia and even Blackberry.
Okay does anybody else come out of left field I'm thinking let me just say -- nobody can laparoscopic fee cap if you want but Hewlett-Packard they bought -- a year ago.
They didn't do anything with that they've had massive management changes last week we were inside Hewlett-Packard with Meg Whitman she said we will do -- Smart phone when we are ready.
To present something that will be competitive could HP get anybody to run for its money.
Again I mean that not only did.
Not only did they not do anything with the we'd be with palm and with the webos software they've that they bought -- but they've they screwed it up by mean they shut it down they came out with -- nice looking tablet but it wasn't a fully formed business.
Proposition here's how I interpret what she told you.
Will do something when were ready means that they're trying to anticipate what the entire next generation of these things are.
And perhaps they'll try to come out with something -- then.
They are completely cooked.
On the current generation of these types of things they're nowhere.
But they completely change every five minutes everything's obsolete showing in my hand though is the charger.
Which is a new charger you're -- chargers will not work on the the -- and as we move it over you can see.
It's so much smaller than the ones that everybody has already for their -- and.
And it annoys me that my two year old iPad the iPad one is not eligible for.
For that the latest software system the Ohio -- six but.
This is typical apple this is the way apple has always done it and -- Illinois a few people along the way -- again.
Those same people respond by buying more apple -- Up all right Adam thank you so much to captive audience at a business -- -- that well after slow.
