Thank you very much for gonna play one more click here for president Obama's speech last night because it'll set up our next -- conversation.
This one is on the Republican party's tax plans here's the president.
Over and over we've been told by our opponents -- bigger tax cuts and fewer regulations are the only way.
That -- government can't do everything.
It should do almost nothing.
If you can't afford health insurance.
Hope that you don't get sick.
If a company releases toxic pollution into the air your children breathe well.
That's the price of progress.
If you can afford to start a business or go to college.
Take my opponents -- -- borrow money from your parents.
Former senator Byron Dorgan joins us now Democrat from from North Dakota today and our our studios in Washington DC.
Think that argument.
Wins wins over undecided voters senate.
Well I don't know I mean I thought it was a really good speech -- a good convention.
And that you know I know the governor Romney is proposing a 20% tax cuts for all the income tax rate brackets.
It would be nice if this country's problems could be solved by cutting taxes but we -- very significant deficits.
And we're gonna have to have some spending restraint real -- spending restraint and also some increased revenue and let me just mention one additional point.
It is evident to everybody that we can get revenue from those that aren't paying their fair share and let me just again mention that governor Romney himself.
For the income tax releases cities made.
Is paying about a 14%.
To raid and running some of his income through the Cayman Islands so.
If they is that there's plenty of opportunities -- to -- to get some more tax money from people who should be paying more to help us that this deficit -- Public and so make the obviously as you know make a counter argument and and basically they'll point I think to to think some number one else say that the record on.
Cutting taxes in an environment like this is proven to work because of what President Reagan did in the eighties and number two then they'll just say something like.
Hey this jobs number we had this morning really was a rough number.
So the economy still in bad shape after almost four -- -- -- time for change both of those arguments could resonate with different people for the Republicans.
Yeah look I think both parties want to get to the same plays they have different methods of doing it.
Everybody wants our economy to expand and have more jobs the jobs number today it was it was not great but look.
It it it's growing it when President Obama took over was shrinking about 78% a year the economy was shrinking substantially.
Now it's growing would would we needed to grow more no question about that.
But the remedy it seems to me for this economy is not too.
To get rid of the regulations on Wall Street had to cut taxes.
It's for a balanced approach that deals with spending and and revenue and the other things that are necessary to -- effective regulation.
Right more less government and it's it's essentially that the critical or or the basic argument that's -- that that this election is going to be all about in terms of the role of a government of people's lives let -- ask -- one last question about momentum because she mentioned that you thought this a pretty good convention a lot of people would argue that the momentum.
Was Billy throughout the week with the First Lady and then with Bill Clinton.
But then last night did the president deliver.
Or was that an underwhelming.
Compared to his own standard -- set.
President Obama and then you followed up with a disappointing jobs report this morning.
Well look have a Democrat and I like President Obama and I think he delivered I think it was a good speech.
And I do think this going to be a close election.
I hope by both candidates take their agenda to the American people help the American people understand the agenda to choose.
And the -- -- create more jobs is spending restraint to some additional revenue effective regulatory -- -- we can fix this country we can expand this economy.
And I think the right remedies if Republicans Democrats can finally begin to work together the right -- -- what what this country back on track again.
Worked together voice you know better than anyone that's -- they I know that's nobody really need it.
I don't need it would.
-- think we agree on that and we thought what we mean we've you know -- talked about this a bunch of times in the last a few months but just seems like.
That's just assisting -- -- -- wish senator Dorgan thank you so much and we'll have you on against him thanks a lot thanks a lot.
