So my.

-- Democratic National Convention is kicking off in Charlotte, North Carolina today.

What do the Democrats need to accomplish while in the tar heel state Stephen Moore is the senior economics writer and editorial board member at the Wall Street Journal and he joins me now.

To -- -- we were just watching that piece and talking together about what Democrats need to accomplish here.

The tone has been -- are you better off than you -- four years ago do you think that what we heard that previous segment was a good answer to that that gets an a for effort that yes Americans are better off putting out.

-- it's a very tough question for Obama I mean.

For a lot of people they feel like we're out of that he did to mediate financial crisis that we all felt 2008 but she's -- mean when you've got.

Three and a half years of -- -- on appointment when you've got less than 2% economic growth when you have a trillion dollar deficits.

It's hardest -- were much better -- there -- four years ago but actually must I think the bigger question the voters are gonna ask themselves when they run proposals.

Out of -- better off for years then there were four years ago.

But rather.

They feel confident.

You know that that they economies repairing that they're gonna be better off over the next four years and that's a question a lot of people are saying no.

I think voters are probably more sophisticated -- right and -- everyone gives them credit for being and rather than just saying are you better off than you -- for years that they are looking at the two candidates are saying well.

You know who can do better job to make my family -- -- do you think they're Mitt Romney is making a good enough.

Case is not yet no not yet that the problem and Romney has is Democrats you know have to have made a pretty case of us that.

You know look this is about the best we can do 2% growth you know we're gonna meant to bring -- unemployment outlook riddle down a little bit.

Romney I think -- to make a more powerful case that my agenda changed a lower tax rates the spending reductions.

The pro drilling oil and energy policies that'll actually put people back to work because there's a lot of independent voters saying you don't want.

It really doesn't matter which party -- selective were.

We're in a terrible situation.

That's that's the hurdle I think and -- promised it over and by the way.

You've read our editorial smallest yet know we've been very critical that while not very critical -- credit you Romney because he didn't really make the case you know he he he introduced himself to American people -- did the biography -- very well.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- They don't -- -- talk about what happened at a rate get when we caught.

But the top tax rates -- -- things you know from 70% all the way to the 20%.

We had an economic boom we have rise -- -- the middle class did very well.

I mean every time we cut tax rates in this country dating back to the Kennedy tax cuts of the 1960s.

Good things have happened we've got more revenues -- the rich -- paid actually higher sure they encompass.

And middle income incomes have on -- Is Mitt Romney running at a time and I -- because I was on my way home from the airport -- that guy is driving is that I don't we all feel like we're running out yeah.

I don't care who wins the election I really just want the guy who's gonna make the economy better -- because I'm sick and not having enough money am sick -- having friends who are out of work.

You who can really make it battered but there's still that -- They're still what sixty elephant if you more than sixty days left and that's a lifetime in politics -- -- okay lifetime so yes sure he's got enough time.

You know on the bid next big big about will be obviously the debates and -- you know it from me that's when -- Romney's gonna have to explain this tax cuts is.

Obama gonna go after that -- these -- the failed that's the other thing you know that that that that Democrats are gonna talk about all this week.

Romney is repeating that failed mistakes of George W.

Bush and that's another hurdle Heidi -- that would -- number one way to -- that.

I think that's where fiscal responsibility comes and you know I'm -- Republican but I'm I'm ashamed of Republicans to hit the fast time they have all the power you know that house that they -- that budget up so they have to earn back the faith -- the American people that not only of the gonna grow the economy but they're gonna.

Bring this deficit down on those two things go hand in hand obviously I just -- -- -- blame -- -- hello he's not running -- I don't know that's -- I'll vote for him me that's a problem for an hour and and those words that.

Brack Obama said during have here's a -- may come back on when he said.

If I haven't you know gotten this job done and and three -- four yours and I'll be one -- they gotta -- think he's got the job back.

-- say yeah like hoping for coming out.
