The Republican National Convention in Tampa that it makes a major adjustments with the threat of -- barreling down.
Day one canceled I'm joined now by Matt Welch of reason magazine from the convention in Tampa -- -- hope.
Republicans ready to party and now you guys -- -- got to sit there and wait must be killing him.
-- say it's terrible have to -- here in Tampa bomb what is actually a sunny day and go to various party tents and and enjoy ourselves so it's.
It's not the worst thing in the world to delay politics by a few hours right you know so I'm watching that preparation for the convention.
I gotta ask get other Republicans in danger.
Of being too -- I mean that we we we need hope and change it and we need to emotional fireside chat and -- -- a big debate over the return the nation to the gold standard.
Well you know I think that it's an interesting theory but it kind of breaks out -- top Mitt Romney didn't win the nomination.
Buy out walking his competitors he actually ran a -- screaming from any kind of specific plan about.
How to cut the deficit and how to cut government spending not special and came to things like Medicare yes he picked a -- Paul Ryan has his vice presidential nominee.
But he also.
Distance himself immediately from Paul Ryan's Medicare plan so.
I think you're pointing to something that there is kind of a warmth GAAP.
Quote Obama present Obama is more likable -- his policies.
Mitt Romney is less likable and has policies but I biggest selling point is gonna be hey you have likable for four years didn't really work out -- well try to Sutherland now.
But why have a convention platform of the gold standard.
Instead -- -- kind of more sellable platform like let's get America back to work.
Well I mean we have let's get America back to work every and we have the same basically abortion language the last four two or three.
Platforms a lot of the same boilerplate language that survived so there's little gold standard.
Thing thrown in there to please an attempt to please the Ron Paul -- and -- because there's an actual critique out there that Mitt Romney is begun to embrace.
That we should pay closer attention to what the Federal Reserve does -- so the center of gravity.
The Republican Party thanks in part to Ron Paul's.
Tireless sort of fixation on this.
By -- now at least talking about the Federal Reserve I don't I don't think the gold standard is going to be the winning campaign item in this election I think the economy basically is.
But.
Platforms are not basically governing documents they are an attempt to cobble together all this fractious.
Different groups have been a Republican -- who are indeed fractious right now we don't have a clear answer.
Of where the party's soul is right now so that's -- be looking to watch this week.
Well let me tell -- the gold standard bank get a really trying to raise the heartbeat fed conversation.
May not do it either Matt Wallace thank you for -- an airport today.
And have a good yes yes.
