Hey guys good morning -- Cincinnati welcome to career accelerator it's jobs Tuesday on.
At foxnews.com live thanks for joining us for this half that -- we have three danger gonna need to know today from three different authors telling us -- how to get the meeting for the job.
Of course how to land -- job and then how to get a higher salary negotiating that raised just so hard these days because you know the -- publicity feel bad doing that.
Well but let's face it no matter how you put it landing -- -- is very difficult these days so to walk us through.
Some tips and we could use is -- city growth the business development consulted its CEO and founder blitz masters.
Also an author of the -- that your resonance to great title and it hadn't read you -- Are right -- you have a -- background and you say approaching getting a job.
You should maybe -- into some of your sales goes right at the salesperson who -- because that.
So for getting past the gate keeper there are a number of things you can do and the gatekeeper is basically the receptionist and the receptionist has been trained day one of the job not to let you through.
So he -- she is ready to go so what you want to do is -- you can call before 8 AM or after five.
Called -- 48 -- after five.
Similar answers the -- that role as for other other folks that are -- typically executives are there before eight and after five so those are more likely your decision makers they're perceptions are gone for Saturday practice yes crafty I -- people are crafting.
The other thing you can do is win the receptionist answers the phone you immediately asked for the sales department.
Any gatekeeper or receptionist that screens you from sales I'm sorry should be fired because how did they know.
That you're not going to buy something from the company.
-- that you immediately asked for sales you're transfer to sales sales people love to talk to give you all kinds of information.
Now you asked the sales person to help direct your call.
To the person -- -- -- -- the sales person like the reception steps exactly nice person doesn't really know -- -- screen -- and I trained and that's exactly -- by nature they're friendly by nature the other thing that happens is now when they transfer your call to the executive the executive is receiving this call from inside the organization and not from the front desk.
Got so they're more likely to take the call for their receptionist when it their personal -- lives exactly dissent with me is very rare I mean that call wouldn't necessarily through rates in this news desk for instance re right.
You may end up with the exactly with the gatekeeper or they assistant.
Citi's CEO -- to do approach that obviously you have to butter -- apple of their money yeah tips for I had.
I'm phone skills which some people don't have these days yes -- me.
Do everything by email.
So one of the things is what I call -- be my hero technique.
And one of the things I think that -- used to saying is I'm wondering if you can help me out and that's okay that can work people wanna be helpful it's just human nature.
But what you do is you in power that sales are that -- as he wrote he'd really be my hero.
If you could help direct my call.
If you can help help we've scheduled appointment with Mr.
Big write something about being hero we -- want to be a hero so that works really well okay good good tips you know I mean it's it is.
We used to have.
And playing well so -- where some times when you money it.
Into eastern company to confirm the story here piece of information you -- just try to get one person to -- past that recent price try any extension yes and that person will be better.
Able to direct you where you need to go -- that's right.
OK so what are some tips and forgetting that meeting with CEO or that whoever the head onto is that you need to talk to -- -- so first you gonna do your research and you wanna go online and search the company -- -- found a particular company that you're interested in working for.
-- and read the press releases because you wanna be current and you wanna be relevant yes what's happening with the company whether goals what are their initiatives and be creative look at that and think how can I help them reach those goals that they want to -- sales for example if they're looking to cut costs.
How can I help them do so now when you're making that call to the executive you're not calling and saying I'm calling -- I -- a job that's that's making it about you.
You want to make it about them and say gosh I just read this recent press release looks like -- Looking to grow your new business and I got some ideas on how I can help with that lets me.
Now it seems to me that this all comes you know most people send thousands.
And they just send them out and what are the chances that you actually get a call back but this seems to me targeting the companies that you really want to work for yes.
-- obviously not making this for all of no no no absolutely that's good point you're not gonna do that for a hundred companies and and what I actually suggest is you might wanna do this with companies who aren't necessarily.
If they're not hiring.
You have no competition.
You are the only one that is looking for this job now that.
You have created for yourself.
And so you make it about.
What is important to that executive what they are trying to accomplish and that you want to meet to share your ideas.
On how they can reach their goal everybody's time is valuable right yes so how do you make sure that that person meets with you.
She'd say I know you're busy can I treat you to -- quick quick cup of coffee at Starbucks right across your street coffee's great difference he's made lunch and one of the things I suggest is you ask for meeting at the quarter hour.
Let's meet at 1015.
Let's meet at 1145.
What that does -- conveys that he'll be a short meeting.
You think -- 1145 that's gonna go until -- that's fifteen minutes I can give you fifteen minutes also nobody else is asking for a quarter our technique so it sets you apart yet definitely good tips OK and then down.
Do you leave a -- now when you get through to -- line and if you do how do you make sure our best ensure that you get a return -- yes I always recommend -- a lot of people don't leave voicemail they shy away from that because it doesn't work for them but the reason it doesn't work honestly is because they're doing it wrong -- but -- -- -- -- -- -- voicemail right -- yet so if you leave a -- -- should be you know hi Bob -- that the -- -- -- I just reading your press release you're looking to grow your -- I have some ideas on how you might be able to do that if you call perfect short -- short of the point yes you sound authoritative.
Right and there's that hook you don't want to share the idea on the voice and now why would they call you back.
I've got an idea -- give me -- -- there's the Poconos and the curiosity.
And we're also gonna talk about how to get a salary race that's gonna come up later with ducks -- -- know you can contribute that yes there right now we have a viewer attack coming in LD 1631.
So you call someone who probably makes commission not really don't buy anything and waste their time scenes like -- -- idea all around.
Well he doesn't like the idea of getting it -- personal -- desperate times call for you.
As -- 163 in line I would argue that that's minutes of their time yeah and now they're gonna talk your ear off sales -- -- to.
Love to be a hero they love to help is worth a shot but LD 1631 -- like you writing it yet.
OK Andrea sitting out thank you so much for coming on let's teach your website right now with an easier name yet -- -- a picture like laser and you.
And author of read that your resident.
Very informative thank you so much thank you there -- -- -- break and we will be back with.
I had except the bad things that are.
Do you think.
Welcome back everybody okay so no one likes when someone has something bad to say about them right but sometimes need to hear it and is better to -- earlier then.
To get fired for it later we're not get promoted.
Because if something like that so we're gonna talk about all of these tips -- how to get constructive criticism.
And has graciously accepted with nickel Williams a career expert.
And founder of works also you are an author as well.
-- with -- girl on yes well I suspect that at at six.
Ninth covers covers up OK so what are some tips and how to -- yeah -- criticism you know it is never easy and it's never easy for you to accept -- generally speaking -- not easy for the person to deliver this constructive criticism so first and foremost you lack.
Not get defense and you know you want to just sit back.
Listen to this information and you know discern on a guttural level is this true -- it's not true and if you feel like this is unfair you haven't you know it doesn't make sense to you.
To ask the person to give you some specific examples you know show me when -- -- and and you know give me an example of when IA did this particular -- he could hear -- -- don't get.
Defensive made me say I -- -- you're saying but I don't know if I understand enough to change it took exactly example.
Exactly asked for the example and and to say you know I I appreciate and I appreciate the fact that -- bringing this.
You know this thing that I'm doing -- -- could be better could be improved upon I appreciate you telling me about it now can you.
Specify so I can dig in and really improve this -- he right here so I know how to -- yet.
First you disagree with what -- and not -- you know and I think that one of the points is to consider who is this -- you know who is this is this a -- co worker who thinks that you should be wearing a different color thinks that you're talking to out on the phone you've got to consider.
Who is this person right and you know what's their vested interest in giving it as constructive criticism so it's -- -- like -- they want you to improve because it's going to essentially improved.
You were performance relative to there's so if you're doing better there likely to do better verses a colleague who may be competing with -- and humane.
You know question whether or not their intention and tell you there is sense really off.
Well -- -- you kind of always agree with their boss spends federal I think you can -- it the week the example I think you can say hey listen thank -- for this and you know.
And ask yourself this or something I can do pro -- -- to get.
Headed for a bit to the proactive yeah step -- just wondering if you should make excuses.
Yet now when you can't live united I have I'll -- I did that because sword you should just say OK got it I think -- -- backing you listen you really absorbing you say thanks again you know it's it's the problem is when you get really defensive and angry and upset with you wanna cry whether you -- -- -- -- you know get lost.
You're back kind of posture is just gonna ensure that they get defensive and then you're gonna get into some kind of altercation -- -- real conversation yes.
You know that you really do want to say.
You know thanks for that's you know even if you are essentially upset about this which inevitably you're gonna be but take that out on -- family have that conversation.
You know not in front and how do you get proactive about making changes yet you know you really do so when they've given you some feedback on your performance you look to what skills can IE -- upon you know is -- course I can take.
Can I look on Linkedin and find other people in comparable positions on what kinds of skill sets -- they have.
And you know how can I go about learning more and taking on more so that I can be a better performer I think once you've got the defensiveness down you could bring out -- okay.
Let me tackle this because at the end of the day like you said in the intro.
When you rather know now you know then later it's like if you really are doing something that's irritating or.
-- really is gonna sabotage her career and earlier you know and the you know more have been able you arts to.
The sooner the better better off you are at viewers chatting and we'll get to some of the now -- list yes I learned long ago that's how I can improve my.
Anything constructive criticism and can you read this.
Governing constructive criticism quote you did it make it on -- round.
OK some political.
Analysts and yeah at face certain things for -- guys reading and writing and I should say.
And then I -- also want to talk -- done -- -- would be.
So after you've you've got everything he needs -- you embrace the -- back.
But what if you wanna start the conversation with your employer so.
You'd think they might not be totally happy with you or you gonna guarantee that they are happy with yes -- you've.
Set up an appointment I think that is a great idea on his son marry me to yeah absolute.
-- and I think that that's a really good point especially in this day and age where everyone's so dramatically busy and the performance review -- kind of lost its place -- You know in our HR yes sure and I think to sit down with your boss and to ask for feedback is is really indicative of the fact that you're taking initiative.
That you want to get this feedback that you wanna improve.
And in that is gonna ease you into a conversation about promotion about raised -- about what it.
Where else you can go you know in your career within this company so it's definitely something.
-- you certainly have to have some thick skin you know it's never an easy conversation if you're I think negative about yourself but.
If you really do you think to yourself OK I really have this opportunity to approve this person is investing in me by virtue of having this hard constructive conversation.
You know what can I take out a bit and move on I -- your best strategy -- other unused to constructive criticism have you guys -- my mother and yet.
-- And -- -- -- in Monte dry or you don't expect.
-- and just and else's strength yes.
Island month -- great okay Nicole Williams thank you so much for coming on your website nickel Williams dot com.
There and of course your book once again his girl top things for those take us.
How to be better workers and figure out what -- think we're doing wrong okay.
We are on -- and will be back with doctor -- on how to get more money gimme my money -- back.
Hey welcome back everybody okay so now for the final couple minutes on at the end my career accelerator Tuesday were talking to doctor -- And I need -- to tell me.
Hike and that's initiate the next days.
Just like that.
Generated in -- the -- here's the thing that we are nine.
Or bargaining or haggling culture and that's one of the towns that we face 'cause we're not conditioned.
To challenge price or to challenge the price that word.
Faced with -- -- not -- if you think about it right.
We're very price standardized cited when you going to -- you don't Hagler bargain for the most part you may look for a better deal somewhere else.
We don't directly negotiate with the individuals there -- the store clerks or whoever it is.
Maybe a little bit in the car buying space but it's very rare.
And according to a -- -- -- study they found that 39% of Americans are nervous when or anxious when it comes to negotiating.
And of the eight countries it looked at were the most anxious and it goes back to that conditioning but to get all psychologists -- but you are that that but I am but that's what the challenges that we have so.
We need to first of all just get over it.
Step that it's okay.
It's okay to be a little bit self aggrandizing a little bit self serving because guess what if you don't step up and ask for it.
You'll never know remember that and get over it that's a first step up and asking them I guess get to know our value.
Yet a second thing is important is before you go in any kind of negotiation particularly when it comes to either getting a raise or even that salary that for salary would you go into job.
Don't understand what your value isn't and this is really two things one is.
Understanding your value in the market so make sure to look up on sites like his skill dot com or go to your local professional association.
Our national association.
Usually they do salary surveys every year every couple years and -- some -- I belong to do that and -- can give you an idea of what the ranges are for your peers so at least have a benchmark to start from right about ice where where the house -- how you -- and then second thing is also understand your value add to the organization.
Because remember you're making that particular appeal.
To your boss your company right you're not gonna get a raise nightmare that looks or nice behavior -- how much you contribute and make a difference -- that company's.
Bottom line yet again and we need to do is find out how to tie your contributions to the -- it to sell it could be loss prevention.
It could be savings.
They could be revenue generation and sometimes these -- in direct.
But spend the time to think about that so that you demonstrate to -- you understand the bottom line in the fact is that it's a business you contribute to.
-- -- that makes -- and it almost seems like a little research project some cars your eight year old or an idea that all the your problem is need more money right and friends call -- -- different steps.
And proof that you deserve that money.
And that it -- timing since you know a lot of companies have annual reviews right -- -- you time -- maybe a little bit before you know you're coming up yeah Iowa at the revealed.
Sure it really depends on the business you have to know the cycles that your business goes through -- you have to -- their fiscal calendars and.
As well as any performance reviews sometimes its quarterly sometimes its yearly and there -- it just really depends on the organization to do your research and know.
When the likely time would be for those salary increases and -- closer to that -- -- -- putting.
That little bug in their ear when it's more realistic but also try to time it with things that you've done well.
-- -- any expressing their mind your successes because remember it's always everybody has that what have you done for me lately mentality that you want them to feel good and say you know what.
-- just did a great job you just finish this project he just enhance -- this way.
Now what is sun you have that meeting and you think it goes -- don't have an immediate answer -- -- do -- how often do you follow up when you say you do follow up.
This is a tough 11 of -- you should always follow up.
And I think write a follow up right away which is to thank you -- thank you so much for taking the time I really appreciated.
And you want to outline here's some of the points we talked about the meeting as a reminder short of the stimulus vote to -- and soured for.
Attending the -- and that.
I if any.
Does it when it's just a couple is just a couple simple things not.
A laundry list of here's what I've done and here's why ideas are right but at least they just to recount of the conversations and have -- as a record a -- it doesn't hurt them.
I I would never thought of that.
And that's about what I hear that manager at all it shouldn't be but you know it I that my caveats always this.
Understand who you're dealing with you know your Boston -- and talk to your peers get their perspective too on how to best do the follow -- but you're really need to follow.
-- that that -- -- now on -- -- it's been a long time since I had to worry about it theories that's not long sorry.
DSL seeing where you analyst funny hair the first inning gives me the most criticism -- -- -- -- I antichrist it's a you played and my mother should be friends and this -- there I don't do therapy I don't did I just deal with a workplace issues -- stay away from that stuff.
Does not getting out there and manipulation.
OK and then on.
You know it's it should brace yourself for the outcome if it's negative after you pride yourself visiting meeting had a airplanes you're good what what -- they say now.
You know it's.
All about first of all it's making a good case so before you go and do it I wanna encourage people make sure you do your homework and make the good solid case and don't be afraid of the fact that we are in down economic times.
Because a lot of companies do you have money and we know that they have money and sell.
They do value good employees remember it is more expensive.
To replace some money and recruit over for that position as president a good employee that it is -- someone you know -- than it is to keep somebody so.
It's really important to keep that in mind and you know what.
-- you go in and they may defer that there may be a timeline but what you wanna follow with is -- when can we have the conversation again now so right to have feedback on.
You know why the negative response.
Maximum points on forty thank you for joining us -- an article up on foxbusiness.com.
And oh lead in society hold you back where past inquiries.
-- now a lot of fun and I want it just in time for December -- -- Right I think -- I think I'm not really getting -- that I -- that that the everybody for coming on hope you had fun and -- Tuesday's career accelerator.
-- -- writings the chats aren't on it today I tried but -- -- just -- we love hearing from an answer.
