The number of people on disability rises to another new record high in July 8 point seven million.
That means for every sixteen people walking there is one person on disability.
Joining us now is Terry Jeffrey -- Red Sea and -- news.
Seems to me Terry that some people may be using disability as an option.
Maybe that it's -- and now lives maybe they've been laid off can -- get another job so disability.
Is just a long tone -- and option what you -- I think I think there's -- doubt that's the case stared in fact even the Social Security Administration under recent -- request.
So that the recession had caused a surge and disability claims that why would that be.
We've seen a recession because contraction in jobs that a -- because people to have the sort of medical conditions that.
Create disability and in a way of looking at you mentioned that number sixteen people working United States -- for every person on disability.
In 1967.
Which is a decade after the program -- green it.
There are 65.
People working for every person on disability said this is a real cultural trend in the United States that this is not a -- -- no.
It's not a good look at this is the wrong use all the -- disability system.
And I -- -- how we're gonna get back to the -- full use -- of it how do we do it.
Well you know before 1956.
This kind of program was left to local states and communities in fact -- -- -- prior to 1937.
Then the -- the Supreme Court and everything was constitutional but now.
We're second the federal disability program how -- you fix it.
I think what needs to -- -- congress seems to tell the Government Accountability Office which is auditing agency and congress.
To audit the disability program -- we even -- the age breakdowns of people on disability how many people in their twenties -- -- -- for example.
And we need another break -- the medical conditions that people are claiming to go on -- supply finally may be most importantly we need to investigate specific.
Disability cases to see what's really happening out there in our communities we we don't know this information we don't have an age breakdown we don't have that it's not.
And as far as I know it's not published by the Social Security Administration they do publish -- and the gross numbers -- -- point 75.
33 million people -- disability right now her -- workers claiming it.
They also have dependent children in some spouses are getting disability benefits so there's more than ten million total people.
But I'm not aware that there is a breakdown that's public.
I think the Social Security Administration may well that is information but I think -- needs to be made public any and -- congress needs to examine it.
I think they need to investigate this programme and didn't really try and restructure it.
So that people are truly disabled OK let's help them.
That people that are using this program -- another form of unemployment need to get off yes Terry Jeffrey from CNS news thanks very much for joining us.
