Joining us tonight to examine this event and to try to better understand it.

We are joined by psychiatrist doctor Gail salts as -- of Psycho therapist doctor -- -- thank you both for being with us and -- -- Let's begin with.

You know no matter how remote -- distant.

Colorado might scene there is a powerful bull.

A motion in the air -- across the country.

There's a feeling.

Sadness that's frightening.

There's also a concern about copycat finds that can happen but.

I mean I think we -- can identify with going to the movies.

And this couldn't then.

Any of this could have been our.

-- husband mother son and daughter.

And so there's a deep sense of empathy we have towards the people who work on in the mask her -- our fellow Americans.

And isn't in this is one community -- this nation.

When where our best -- the at the very least.

Let me ask -- doctor army.

What what would move.

In your judgment.

Someone to take take this kind of action to to be this horrific.

In his actions.

What when we look at the history of -- shooters the usually are loan.

People who are feeling disenfranchised.

A small percentage of them have serious psychiatric illness it remains to be seen that's going on here they're psychosis or some delusional thought that motivated this.

But more often -- somebody who -- -- a failure.

A failure socially -- failure functionally in their life.

They become depressed their angry.

They become paranoid they blame others for their failure and this is an attempt to in -- grandiose way.

Get fame so to speak to -- -- -- how they feel which is why it's very important that that the media.

Not glorified this person not talk a lot about who he is so much as an individual but rather focus on.

The victims and heroes the police and him and people who really deserve that the glory if you well.

On not not this person.

And we're finding out that this person.

Not to -- to try to understand -- -- was right he's 24 year old high beta kappa ranch.

In new euros science which is not -- I mean it is an extraordinarily.

My rigorous discipline.

Five beta -- from yesterday's.

-- brilliant.

I -- well you can see -- primarily Brian eat and and disturbed and maybe he was somebody who put a lot of pressure on himself we don't know what his hateful that.

Put him in perhaps a psychotic state you know in home sounds like may even -- part of the opening night.

He became.

Part of the movie.

That he took on the role as the bad guy because he feels like he's that.

And this was a way for him to feel more powerful why would I would say when I when I mentioned that Nash users -- our failed and when you have very high expectations for yourself they're disappointed and you don't meet that that is part of that I am here.

They're not living the life they they think they should be -- And the payment is being felt by families all over the country.

The loss of loved ones.

If the injuries.

To loved ones.

You're sitting in the theater.

If it midnight in someone breaks in that way.

-- force people find by the context first of all it's it's a movie.

This person is an outrageous garb in any other context.

Be outrageous.

But not one person stands up to test.

You know -- I think first -- -- there was no it's -- disbelief I mean you know this is simply not -- it's never happened before.

-- so I think it's important to reassure people that this is intentionally rare because I think there -- a lot of kids that are frightened tonight people that are frightened tonight.

And they need to remember that this is vanishing rare but I think people.

Didn't believe that one.

I also think you know were unfortunately very desensitized.

To violence in this country.

It's part of our entertainment.

It's it's television it's news it's movies it's video games and that's why they say that.

Although this is rare and said it.

There is an increase since spree -- since the eighties so one wonders.

You know of our exposure to violence and pornography is somehow contributing to this and someone.

And mayor Michael Bloomberg within a matter of hours this morning wanting to know what Romney and Obama gonna do but I've got.

Without a moment's hesitation politicizing.

A moment of trash but it's not just politicizing because I think the question is out there.

What at least the minimum the question is.

Why is someone to in order protect themselves need -- kinds.

They need now it's even if you wanna say you have a right to -- our -- government -- side how many got okay guns I.

But -- -- -- -- should not be if I may not certain why would the question not be one -- the world went through three people in that audience with guns to fire this man and then the moonlight theater would be the wild wild west do we really want is that is that is so we don't we do not want.

A movie theater to turn into.

The -- of massacre is that we're we're really big problem because nobody want to take away Second Amendment right.

Having -- back.

We can't always predict who's going to be dangerous and so overlap with the problem.

This man did not have he might of had a history of some kind of illness but he wasn't finally so how determine.

-- you guys are -- -- and that goes for the next -- out yes power we how are we dealing with mental illness in this country.

In the reflexive nonsense are going to the Second Amendment having said that it can't go on to say yeah.

You know that's unacceptable this is still America this is not.

Today European nation state in which we will surrender.

Our identity is on our rights -- -- uniqueness.

Two convenience of those who will not be with the reality that we have people every day -- were mentally ill.

With we're not dealing honestly -- as a society.

And let's all or say -- -- professional.

A lot of people were mentally ill are not dangerous and actually -- -- they are the majority of people and acting and enough I think the majority of -- hunters shall we actress -- -- just -- -- -- -- -- You've just suggested that we keep it very clear.

Perspective.

Proportionality.

When talking about mental illness yeah but you abandoned immediately when talking about Second Amendment Rights.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have Second Amendment Rights -- -- but hey are admitting are -- not that you abandoned proportionality and that discussion where you immediately.

One -- -- -- forward proportionality when talking about.

New -- -- the really tired group reply when I was but the really -- about proportionality because I can't count but.

I do think we need to evaluate who we are selling our guns --
