You here to weigh in on the day's top story doctored Richard Land president of the ethics and religious liberty commission and doctor Daniel -- over.

Founder of the psychiatric consultants of Florida welcome T above I know you're probably noticed as -- by the story as I was.

My first reaction now go to you first Richard Land was what's wrong with us that this keeps happening over and over again what was your reaction.

Well I was saddened I was shocked.

You know you you go to a movie theater you expect this to be a place where you can relax -- a -- of escape.

And yet it's not a place of safety you had this terrible tragedy take place.

And you know unfortunately in our society we have people.

Who go off the rails.

And sometimes don't know give many signals ahead of time they're going off the rails and they they perpetrate these terrible atrocities.

Brian we're all left aggrieved as a nation for our fellow Americans who have lost.

Daughters and sons and husbands and wives and image is just a terrible terrible tragedy I'm worried -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Who apparently left medical school something like a month ago.

And death of course she is being studied very intensively now but.

-- Turkey talk to you -- over about what your reaction to this news was.

Well it's obviously.

Terrible tragedy my hearts goes out to the family and the victims.

I think when something like this happen is we sort of have a knee jerk reflex we wanna try to understand it and try to make sense that but I think the thing to do is not too.

B reactionary and not to change policy based on one events.

-- are just some individuals who are deranged.

And who have sick delusional fantasies and they live in their own world.

And there's really that not not there's nothing that we can do really.

As a society from a policy standpoint to prevent that from happening for example I hear a lot of people talking about.

Gun control and there is it's obviously a very polarizing issue.

But I don't think that gun control laws changing are the answer there's really nothing you can do to -- did you.

Ruling -- determine if it's not just gun -- people are talking about tonight they're also talking about additional safety measures in theaters.

Made I don't know maybe -- frisk everybody often an overreaction at this time as you just said.

Richard Land I wanna bring up a study.

It -- sort of strangely coincided with this story today.

That one in five Americans now describe themselves as not religious when they're asked to check the box for the religion that year end.

Presbyterian.

Methodist Catholic whatever they they check the none box.

What do you make -- it and does -- tell you something about today's society that might produce.

The kind that that we saw today.

Well -- perhaps so although I I wouldn't put too much emphasis on that first of all that study.

It says that you know 19%.

Say that there -- none but actually only 5%.

Are -- or -- the others are quote nothing in particular.

Which means that they just aren't very attached -- or not attached in the Gonzales I mean your reaction seems to be that well that's okay.

Well it noise for me is a minister is not okay but I think it's it would be different that having 19% who were committed atheists and agnostic.

And these people tend to be also the study said that they tend to be very young.

And -- we know that a lot of young people.

Goes through a phase of rebellion.

Look I'm not here to advocate that America doesn't need to be more religious.

I as -- minister of the gospel.

Wish that everyone would have you know a personal relationship with Jesus and would.

Go to church on a regular basis and pray every day.

But I think -- the fact is is that when we look at America.

8081%.

Of Americans claim to believe in some and believe in -- supreme base 75%.

Claimed it.

Affiliated with some form of the Christian faith.

And 61%.

Say that -- very important in their lives so America still.

Among the nations of the world one of the most religious countries in the world.

And well I think the reason we -- turned and that's a solid.

You are public institutions.

You know in god we trust on the dollar bill I had all of -- -- the declaration of independence the first paragraph mentions got that mean.

Through and through out our our society you see the references.

Daniel barber to you -- do you think that.

This study that I -- has anything to do with today's events is there any commonality in those -- I don't think that they're necessary -- necessarily linked but I do you think.

That there's a larger message which is I think there's been a lot of changes and our culture for example there's been changes in the traditional family unit.

I think people have.

Had a lot more gratification from social media from technology.

And so as a result I think they're getting that meanings somewhere else.

If you look at the history of religion it was really.

The provided a moral.

And structural framework for people on how to live their lives and I think we've kinda straight away from that a little bit I think we have some different ideas about that now.

You know I hit me you see an event like today in a lot of people think.

Wow how could it have been prevented the timing again when you really studying these events in history what you find is that.

Neighbors thought this person with a little -- or they had you know there was something going on that was -- -- but nobody ever took the time.

To really try to figure out what was going on is -- -- Richard Land missing link.

In our society that were not watching out for each -- as much as we mine.

Well I think that that your other guest was talking about the fact that we've got social media and other things that are taking the place of social relationships and I read today where one of those of this young man's professors said that he was socially inept.

I think that that we were not being socialized -- in other words we're being we're being cocoon -- In our entertainment and -- in our houses and we're we're being sealed off from each other and we need to push for more.

Social relationships her in our society and and and -- we look out for each other where you know the neighborhood I grew up it was a neighborhood where if I did something wrong.

My parents know about a before I got home.

Because I know -- -- called and told the -- There weren't as cigarettes doctor Barbara -- that's.

By IAE IA just act go the sentiments of the other -- I think it's too I think we are living in -- social media cocoon and although in some ways were easily it's easier to communicate I think in some ways we feel much more distant and much more cut off so I think that's something as a society we have to look at.

Well it's a tragic story today and just horrible news for all of us but.

An unbelievably bad day for the families of these victims thanks to you both for coming on and talking to us about you very much doctor land doctor Barbara thank you so much pleasure.
