So we often get from government lousy products and services that cost a lot.
We need some government but not so lot so much that it is bankrupting us.
And tonight's first guest works for government he's the governor but he says you'd be surprised at how much government you'll never -- He's Indiana governor Mitch Daniels so what will we minutes.
Oh John there's a lot you won't miss a lot of the -- they get around you -- -- Things like vehicles and planes -- they tend to accumulate.
-- only -- war if you won't miss the lousy service we always -- -- the yellow pages tested -- In there then conceivably I government should be doing in itself it is in the yellow pages and there are more than a couple competitors.
Offering at do you say government shouldn't -- It's at least that's the question is somebody's -- do in this all day everyday maybe they're better at it and of course as you say they have the incentive to get better because if they don't they go out of business which government can't do.
But they just want money they're just greedy you're a public servant you're doing it for the people.
-- I love I love the sarcasm that you you know you put your finger on a real question of people old people feel that way well yes but.
There's a certain.
Another that a form of greed it's every bit as insidious than that.
And summons and in the human tendency to try to get ahead make money and that's the greed for power over other people that's a constant.
Danger in government that needs to be guarded against.
Are you mentioned the property that government keeps holding onto you leave some property in India has told -- tell us about that.
-- -- -- losing money around as a political patronage operation for fifty years still haven't paid off its bonds patronage being iron.
The run in the highway -- -- and hire my friends my supporters.
Yes and so we found a way to.
Harvest some money we never would ahead and we billing billions of dollars of roads -- No taxes no interest they're borrowing costs and meanwhile we get the best toll -- we've ever had.
But you did you -- to to a foreign company and you really had to work to sell that used -- convince people you really.
Fought for -- here's a clip from -- This is the test this is.
There is no other way there is no other plan and there isn't gonna be doing their quotas -- against our future.
You you were on fire them.
I've never seen that passion that you really sold that you've calmed down since.
Well I get fired up when I think that.
The future of our states at stake it was then and it was simply a better use of an asset that in government hands was underperforming.
But why wouldn't be better here -- here's Indiana running the whole road for the people vs a private company foreign companies are gonna make money for its shareholders there that much more efficient.
Well -- you know we Americans distrust bigness and in business labor and and government for a good reason we really and we don't permit monopolies we've gotten rid of just about all looks at government itself.
And why do not like monopolies because they overcharge and -- serve their customers.
They have no incentive not to the people run -- that road now had every incentive to put an electronic tolling put build more lanes for less congestion.
And to -- to run -- traffic moving fast and easily make more money -- later on allows you -- people will drive.
A lump sum on the road find a way around it so they have a very positive incentive to do -- the state wasn't very good at doing.
Even after he won the vote it wasn't popular with the people 60% and one polls that told roads a bad idea we're gonna.
That a private company collect the tolls but today -- the result.
The result is -- repairing bridges building roads where the only state with a building boom and infrastructure in cost the taxpayers nickel.
One other controversial thing you did this one just this year you signed a right to work bill.
-- is right to work me.
All it really means is that it's the workers decision whether or not to pay the -- you can't be forced to -- -- as a union -- union -- sorry as a as a condition of work I was forced to pay to join a union work at ABC.
New York is a forced union state.
And this place fortunately is nothing yet in our have to but I -- like not having the choice.
I would think that would be popular with people it is about seventy plus percent of the folks in our state thought that was fair and right -- up.
I'll -- you wouldn't push it for a long time.
Well we -- we had the first of all we had a see a real opening to do it it didn't it didn't arrive -- last year but up today that the main point about right to work for us gets back to what I think government should always.
Have as its very first priority that's the creation of opportunity for people if it does its job well it creates the conditions whereby men and women of enterprise create wealth for each other we thought to continue Indiana's climb.
Up the list of the very very best places for jobs investment right to -- made sense.
I would think that.
Right to work is just stronger cause than the whole collective bargaining fight that happened in Wisconsin works with so much -- and Iran.
That you're saying nonunion members should not be prevented from half -- job so it was I'd be here protesters saying.
No right to work -- -- union opponents to right to work continued their chanting.
If that's the message to these arrogant people -- -- thing.
Hello hello lamp well lamp -- -- -- having weakened up.
So he's calling you arrogant but I would think it's the union who's saying what kind of living you can have if you're forced to join.
-- and I understood that it was going to be a very emotional matter particularly for those who have very committed to the union movement.
A compulsory dues has been.
A principal but that no free writing if you have to join the union and that's -- -- I understand that argument but in Indiana we've gotten the point.
Where we were winning about 90%.
Of the time when businesses were comparing more than one state.
But we were being.
Blocked from about a third of the opportunities because about one and three businesses.
We're only gonna -- there were only gonna go to a right to work state and so we had to take that barrier down.
By the way as soon as we did there'd been a -- lot of businesses we -- -- wouldn't talk to us before.
And -- you are sort of a loan let's let's put that map up that shows right to work station.
All the states around -- Are forced union states all those businesses must be now saying hey this little island of freedom here we've ever been an island of very pro growth policies in general this is just one.
You cut government jobs by 21%.
Since he took off.
We have the fewest state employees per capita in the country and we had the fewest our -- has had since 1975.
You word 78 million dollars in debt.
Now you have a one and a half billion dollars surplus.
We just simply slow down the rate of spending in.
To about half rate of inflation within their seven years and compound rate of spending as well under the -- -- you don't even have to make it cost you just have to slow the growth.
Yes and and you know the -- -- pretty low and government -- that was certainly our experience.
You've also pass the school choice bill congratulations on that but I want to just give you some push back you've got the Indiana economic development corporation.
This sounds like cry capitalists crony capitalism scam when you get to say okay this company will give you special break to come here.
Why not get rid of these development companies and just lower the rules and Texas riverboat.
Well first of all that corporation that not that you're asking about.
We never give out any cash as some states do.
And we measure them based on how.
All we ever do is give conditional.
Incentives no jobs and investment no incentive tax break.
Temporary tax relief why why -- -- -- -- it just lower taxes for everybody you have to do this to compete not on -- often you don't.
But I will say -- see a lot of other states doing things differently is very dangerous.
Give politicians checkbook and say.
You know do anything you want to bring good jobs to our state because -- incentive -- to cut the ribbon and they can be gone.
You know to the next job when the bill comes due we don't do that and Indiana -- finding you can win.
Without doing so.
Well thank you governor Daniels Indiana is now rated number three in the country and most free state economy which is a big improvement.
You're not quite up there with New Hampshire and South Dakota but look what -- cannot.
Thank you governor Daniels coming --
