The nation's food stamp program will cost taxpayers 770 billion dollars in the next ten years.
-- one of the problems.
Critics argue hello about food stamp money is routinely spend on junk food according to the -- -- the science and public interest.
Four billion dollars in food stamps all use to buy soda just soda every yeah.
Florida State Senate Rhonda storms joins us now from Tampa senator.
I know you're leading figure.
That's restrictions.
On food stamps but cannot first of all ask you this.
Why is it that the government will not tell us what have food stamp money is spent.
And lost -- -- spent on why the secrecy.
Well why did they tell you that they want -- that they want to hear what they're what I think -- real reason has I'll I think -- real reason is it's.
-- it's because I think that they're protecting the industry.
And so so the fact that they -- despise that says to me that there are some very powerful -- interest that.
That don't want that information and groceries and convenience stores that don't want that information just glad it's -- now let me tell you -- they don't know.
Yeah out but I think they do what they obviously they must I mean they rarely out if if a lot of food stamps that's right wall mosque wall mom knows what they've been spent on his another quick question though why am I hearing so many -- Ads thought you know sign up for food stamps it's healthy stuff sign up now I'm hearing them every day on the radio here in new York and I'm sure you hearing -- down there in Florida why advertise them now.
Well I mean I think that's a -- I think that's a political ploy in a political game I mean the bottom line is Americans want to make sure that there's a safety net and they want to make -- People get -- create and healthy food when they need it when they need -- hand we don't want people living -- used to live in Turkey people lived in -- and had to eat.
-- from the done.
We don't want that in this country but they don't want to be buying potato -- AdSense soda and candy bars and see people go through that line and have.
Bags of potato chips and soda isn't and and no healthy food wet -- -- -- out would you would do you want legislation that would ban food stamps from being used for law.
Sugar drinks sodas potato chips high salt high fat food would you do that.
Well I think that it's -- it's a fiscally responsible thing to do listen if we're talking about at the federal level.
Cutting people off from food stamps I think a better way to say is why don't we provide good healthy -- Why don't we provide good solid.
800 number example of what is are you not prepared to say hey you you got food -- which you cannot buy -- with it would you say that.
I'm absolutely prepared to say that at the point of after registered that that that it would not be able to be.
Money would not be able to be spent on Saturday Edson and -- for -- I'm absolutely prepared to say that and moreover I think that it's perfectly.
Capable big grocery stores are perfectly capable of causing that to happen because they already do it they are ready do it for which they thirty -- -- -- food stamps.
For instance they know that they can't buy toilet -- that they can't buy beer that they can't buy liquor with food stamps until -- came -- you try to swipe your card.
They -- declined that point of sale they are ready have the capability to do it.
But they -- but they lack the will the government lacks the -- in the grocery stores.
The convenience stores that industry lacks the well to do it they they want to be able to sell these things.
