Joining me now Fox News political analyst Juan Williams Juan thanks for being here looks let's start with the president today.
And economic speech and as you and I have discussed.
As recently as last night this was to be -- bring me.
I don't see what was -- I don't see why even bother.
Helping -- out.
The rating from the White House perspective -- ways to say this is what I stand for and this is what my opponent mr.
Romney stands for.
But you know you knew that and I knew that so they're legitimate criticism here is no new ideas that what the president is saying is in fact.
Here are other ways that I would spend that money.
And in essence asking for permission to have more stimulus spending and you know politically that toxic it's not gonna sell.
But he's also saying that with when it comes to Mitt Romney's idea about more tax cuts for corporations extending the bush tax cuts for individuals.
That basically that money is not being paid -- if you care about the debt why -- Ronnie tell you.
Where he would in fact be making cuts because he's he did the president suggest it's because.
Those cuts would come out of the middle class.
I've got to ask you this because the politics of this thing with -- and when I say this thing but White House political office and the Obama campaign team.
-- -- -- He is basically talked about a reset a reboot.
And -- does precisely the same thing as he has done he has said again that he was spend more money.
He has said again that public employees are preferable to private economy employees.
It in our economy it's it it's it's repetition.
It's delusional to suggest that this is an anyway no.
Either in terms of what he's proposing are are.
-- his responses through governor Romney.
-- -- -- I think I think your perceptions acute there is nothing like you're not wrong the -- I know but you're asking me.
What's the political thing right and the political content of the speech with the states have people who watched tonight on your show.
This and they're two very distinct views of our economic future and you're gonna have to pick one and if you're in the middle class if you think -- had a rough time right now.
I think this is what the president saying that you're better off going with the Democrat who's going to invest in middle class and infrastructure and the rest that any Republican.
Who may be up to more cuts in terms of spending some of those cuts which may impact you so politically that's the appeal.
-- and at the same time as he suddenly he's talking middle class when he's read when in fact.
He's redistributing to those who would aspire to the middle class were distributing correct our national income.
It's as if he doesn't understand that a third of the middle class is no longer middle class.
As a result of what has transpired under his watch whether he is directly responsible or not -- -- in nine states over the past three and a half years.
Well he in fact you know what you saw today was he made very little reference to that period.
Basically what he's talking about is going forward.
He's not going back I I don't think there's any way it's a politically salable idea to say the stimulus worked at this point the American people wouldn't buy it -- But he is saying -- said today that if you look at congress and he tied congress to Mitt Romney.
That they have been obstructionist that they won't go along with us his attempts to do what spend more money just as you were describing -- And if they had not you know one man's obstructionism is another's.
Prudence and judgment and responsibility.
It's because -- part of the world the deficits would be that debt would be.
Had it not been for constrained at least on the part of the Republicans in the House of Representatives.
-- -- and we -- awfully difficult political.
Initiative for this president to pursue.
It's a high wire act you know I think one of the woman -- -- gonna try to walk over Niagara Falls this weekend and I think what we're seeing to date from the president is a high wire act in which he says don't look down don't look at that passed that the record that I accrued when we have not seen the economy take off.
Look instead he says to the future and to what the alternative would be under.
The Republicans and again -- -- Those Republicans are gonna take you down a path that's going to be punitive to the middle class that's gonna be punitive to anybody who is not a multi millionaire.
And it seems like he's enthusiastically.
Answering us to forget his stewardship.
-- the -- for the past three and a half years.
No doubt I mean look -- -- You thought you heard by the way that was a long speech was -- and our book and -- are ordered to Iraq and maybe we go to your old reality.
Right but this is this is what we're gonna get going forward now you know I think there's some things that are gonna intervene.
We you -- spoke about the controversy just as we've got the health care decision coming.
But this is the conversation that's setting the tone for the campaign I don't think there's gonna be any getting away from it.
Especially as we get to more not jobs numbers labor statistics GDP numbers in the months to come.
Juan Williams thank you you're welcome.
