Earlier this week Mitt Romney you know locked up enough delegates clinch the nomination on the Republican side and now the focus on the on the fall campaign and President Obama vs Mitt Romney and could be a long summer here in little silly season thrown in.
But all kinds of things going on but Juan Williams is with us now from DC -- and -- contributor and he joins us to talk about.
All of that and you know on the on the ends up he is off today notably back Monday wants kind enough to join us to thank you sir good to see if you're welcome -- You know.
I want to talk about both strategies a little bit and the president going after Romney not only now on Bain Capital but attacking specifically as record as governor of Massachusetts.
But then also Romney clinching the nomination on a night where is -- Donald Trump -- -- -- and in that couldn't exactly be how they'd.
One of the draw this thing up in the trump trump is back apparently.
Not trump is back because drug helped him raise some money he can use the money.
But you know I think your point is well taken in that.
They're still are these various factions and elements on the Republican side that still hang out there even though now given what happened Tuesday in Texas.
Our Romney can say -- since the deal he's got the trophy in hand he will be the nominee it's no more likely before his name.
But here you have a situation where even like the people who finished second -- Rick Santorum Newt Gingrich.
They've been slow to come around I mean same -- of course is the guy who said you know Romney be the worst possible candidate you know.
Rick Perry got there who said you know was he was the one -- whole conversation about Bolger capitals.
-- -- know how do you get all these elements of the Republican Party.
Just to get in lockstep the answer is they all want to defeat President Obama but then when you send them out there -- -- when they start talking Connell.
They all have these very crazy message and -- -- of that is Donald Trump with his birth -- message right which is you know just not helpful.
They can't be I mean I am -- it's pretty much been pretty my it has been.
I discredited by all the facts but at the same time there are people you know there's there's this fringe out there -- -- you know about it.
-- that that they either believes this stuff or or wants to -- and you know Romney doesn't have to say it -- kind of denied -- -- wants that he's got trump to say Foreman make it gets those people excited I don't know.
Well I think that's exactly right you say they're very polite fashion but I think it allows Romney.
To remain in touch with people in the base who are birthers and who have this wacky perspective or whatever conspiracy minded approach to it.
And did he meet Ronnie doesn't want.
To come across as moderate or somehow condescending to people who -- let theory so -- -- with Donald Trump.
Who is trumpeting this very Leary and I think it helps him with that.
Part of the base but it also -- mean the danger here is.
There's a much more substantial and critical.
Slice of independent suburban voters who don't want any part of that.
And don't see it as on message in terms of talking about the economy they see it as a distraction and even people in Boston -- Romney headquarters -- it that it.
But -- they're trying to just have enough to do with trump but not too much to do it trump.
It's that's why I think it's on the Republican side before we get to the nasty fight that's coming.
Already started with -- with President Obama.
Mitt Romney has that's somehow find a way to get the Republican team to play they get what exit.
-- and then on the other side though it's just as much of a challenge to religious thing I've been trying to watch the president and C.
What he's trying to accomplish first he goes after Romney -- Bain Capital has other people do it and now it's the the the record of -- obviously governor of Massachusetts and has been very little from the president lately appears what I've done and here's what I plan to do in the next four years if I'm elected and I wonder if that's the right -- -- maybe it is maybe that's what he has to make a choice that says hey.
They if you if you -- -- this guy you know it's gonna be worse than but that's kind of an -- sink strategy from an incumbent do you think it's the right one would you give the president similar advice if you were advising him.
Yet look at soak up what you're -- -- not been over this before let's look at the big picture here if your if this is that election just about President Obama right.
Well you ought -- progress -- we hope that this recession would have ended more quickly which still very anxious about the economy people insecure.
All this talk about large government deficits.
High unemployment.
You know people have a lot of worries and so they admit they may not actually say you know -- he is the guy I want to confirm that yes he was the right choice -- gonna -- But if President Obama.
From his perspective says.
-- it's not just a referendum on me it's also a matter of contrast and look at my opponent's record he says he can do so much better on the economy hot yesterday the White House is putting -- these numbers you know look he was I think it was 47 out of fiftieth with regard to job creation when he was governor of Massachusetts this is something by the way going back to the Republican -- something that Rick Perry and others were saying at that time.
That he's not the magician he's not the wizard when it comes to.
Economic revitalization.
You know and of course the president said.
You know he was good at making money for being but that's different than looking out for all the American people -- you know so that's the argument the argument is instead of making a referendum about.
The president making a contrast with his opponent so that's why the president now is focus or the presence campaigns focused on Mitt Romney's record thank you -- always great to see you in all we'll talk to again -- not.
Big word count thank you I'll try Juan Williams they're -- these.
