The line is blurring between online privacy and advertising as companies use your personal information and search results to try to sell your products and services Adam Shapiro.

Is that the all things digital.

Conference in California with a very special guest Adam.

And -- when we talk about the Internet economy there's a projection that by 2016 it will be a four point two trillion.

Dollar money -- so this issue of privacy is key to the discussion.

Boston Consulting Group just issued a report on the privacy issue and how to get the laws correct.

Long with -- world economic form and joining us from the Boston Consulting Group is John -- senior partner.

And the key issue John it seems to be is what is privacy on the Internet and how -- companies like Google or FaceBook continue to make money.

If certain municipalities are countries put up kind of Chinese walls that forbid any kind of mining a personal that.

But it's going to be critical to balance.

The ability of a FaceBook or Google or anyone else to mine and news.

An individual's personal data -- -- protecting the rights of that individual and protecting their safety.

What what it what when we say privacy what is privacy do I have an absolute right to forbid.

FaceBook group who will be used any information about where I'm -- on the net well.

Yes you do but that may mean in exchange you don't actually get to use some of the services that Google and FaceBook offer so.

FaceBook Google and everyone else in the world operate their businesses to generate revenues and return profits and if you missed -- is allow those kinds of options how does a Google let's -- -- -- -- investors who just -- and a FaceBook make money down the -- opposite to the extent to which the that there are governments around the world that say you can't use any personal data than FaceBook will.

Ultimately at some point be in a position saying that's great but you -- conserve -- Are not able to use service AB and C you're not be ain't gonna be able to get access to set.

It's like saying for television.

If there were no ads allowed in television and by the way ads are targeted based on demographic information associated with who watches the annoyance on television they'll be able -- -- -- -- and will pay for the people are shooting us.

And -- be able to watch because you couldn't afford to actually create it.

So there's a balance of allowing the data to be used or as we political allowing the data to flow.

And have a -- safely so let me wrap up is anyone worldwide getting this right and what's at stake if they get a -- So.

It's complicated and many folks around the world particularly governments are getting it partially right but not necessarily completely right.

There's a difference between the rules around usage -- rules -- holding people accountable and getting -- all right and in places heart.

What's at stake is on one hand multiple trillions of dollars of value for companies and for investors at the same time from.

A whole series of services that consumers really want and if there isn't it economically viable way to provide -- consumers are not gonna get them and it's clear that consumers want them badly.

John rose thank you very much for joining us we're -- -- four point two trillion dollars they're not many world economies that can even.

Have that kind figure I'm I'm trying to think China is a six point two trillion GDP were fifteen trillion.

-- unit that is certainly a monster to be doubtless OK thank you can join the weather out there I gotta -- thank you.
