There is a huge tussle breaking out in Washington.
Of a president Obama's reputation.
As a big spend up.
It all started when MarketWatch columnist -- nothing wrote a column saying President Obama has actually slowed spending compact it was big assesses.
Here's what Press Secretary Jay Carney told the media on Air Force One right after he got hold of that column and I'm quoting.
Do not buying into the DS that you hear about spending and fiscal constraint with regard to this administration.
I think doing so is a sign of sloth and laziness.
So let's -- directed to the man who started this whole thing going -- nothing from MarketWatch.
Joining us on the phone he wrote the article -- welcomed the program -- having whether spank the lot thanks for having me.
Did you didn't expect this response did you you it would write -- the left for us long.
I'm not really.
Not actually I'm not because I think that this is you know a big issue in the campaign.
President Obama's reputation.
-- taxing and spending.
And I come to really surprised that the Democrats haven't pushed back more on this.
Well you know -- being that they're pushing back at you.
-- and many critics are saying look this is you're using a kind of statistical manipulation.
To come up with the conclusion that the president is not a big spend -- What's your response.
Well I try to be as fair as possible.
And and as look at look at the actual way the but is put together.
You know people that's -- assumed that everything happen in 2009.
Should be sort of -- to be a bomb.
But actually DeWitt budget works there is fiscal 2009 -- just start in October of 2008 so it was 13 over by the time Obama came -- -- us.
So so -- second -- that means that the stimulus program which was put in place I think in March and April of 2009.
That doesn't go on to the spending column for President Obama.
Well no I just to put that what I did was like took what what they've budget picture was on the -- that they Obama took office.
And then whatever he added to that the stimulus then he added some.
Expansion of the children's health program.
There was another appropriations bill passed that -- spending that that -- that CBO hadn't hadn't expected.
And so I I put all that not what Obama.
And what I found -- that the big explosion in spending happen in 2009 with the TARP money.
And with the increase in unemployment that put so many people on unemployment.
So benefit and so you know -- you know going back to bush as opposed to Obama because of the timing of the budget yeah.
