One of the most contentious issues in public education in this country in addition to teachers unions in school vouchers.

But to me it's pretty straight forward vouchers help parents pay for private schools giving your kids more opportunity.

And in some cases -- safer choice without putting their retirement on the line and going broke in the process.

And I'm not alone in this making nineteen states in Washington DC have a voucher system or similar program.

That's according to the Wall Street Journal.

In fact in some cases now these vouchers can be used for state apprenticeships and college courses.

Wisconsin is home to the nation's oldest voucher system -- over 20000 students participating the average cost is about 6000 bucks.

That's state concentrates -- dollars on lower income families.

In big cities like Milwaukee.

Families making less than 70000 dollars a year -- the only ones eligible.

And the use of vouchers -- have skyrocketed since 2010 with more than 220000.

Students currently enrolled in these programs.

Since -- states like Virginia Florida and Indiana have created or expanded voucher programs.

Louisiana will soon have the nation's largest voucher program.

Once the governor signs it into law next week.

The overhaul would mean upwards of 380000.

Students would be eligible for the program up from just 18102009.

And like I said the upside -- these vouchers is pretty clear an opportunity to escape poor performing schools.

But it's also greatly saving what tax Payer money.

Yes -- the state government -- in these private school vouchers are cheaper than sending a kid to public school.

Take a look at Louisiana now currently the Statesman's about 8500 bucks.

A pupil to educate public school students but only about 4500 on voucher students.

Sounds like a win win right.

Earlier this week I sat down with former DC schools chancellor Michelle Murray who fired back at critics of voucher programs.

Hear people say well it's not good for this is -- -- -- or you know the the the school district needs more time to improve.

It's very very rare if ever that you hear the people who are complaining about programs like vouchers are charters.

Their kids are not going to the failing schools so they're asking other people.

To subject their children to a reality that they would never accept for their future.

Are you got to be fair there are conflicting studies on the academic benefits of vouchers.

But all I know is this if my kid felt safer and happier going to a school -- an institution that would put him or her on a better path for the future.

That's all the research -- -- giving families options when it comes to their children's education can only help in the long --
