In -- for more on the santorum's strategy in Michigan whether it will work we welcome -- his political analyst Juan Williams author of the book muzzled the assault.
On honest debate former special assistant to president George W.
Bush Ron Christie thank you both for being here.
Quite a reversal or -- is mr.
Santorum.
Kind of breathtaking in that short a period of time.
It has it in almost -- looks like every can desperation.
-- Republican candidate running and a Republican primary.
The last thing I would do is reach out to the Democrats and less I was worried that I was gonna what is so I think Santorum of his robocalls as appeals to independents and Democrats.
While it's legal and lot of Republican commissioners say you really are conservative guy who should be our nominee I don't think it's a good plan.
Well and Santorum says of course -- New Hampshire is an open primary what's the big deal right and those -- the rules the rules -- open and those you wanna get people to vote for you know infineon -- is reaching out to people who are eligible to vote now what we have seen returns the exit polls with.
A very peculiar situation.
In which people who identify themselves as very conservative are voting for Santorum but also people who identify themselves as very liberal and.
And that suggests -- tough but that's biggest Gary -- I love that word and Nigeria yeah.
There's not a politics not a barn never we never leave.
This that this is really any interest in race because.
-- in Michigan we're being told right now.
And the free press is reporting in Detroit that turnout as approximating that of 2008.
It's uncertain obviously but we're talking summer during a million a million and a half folks that's pretty good -- That's very good considering that what we've seen as a pattern throughout most of the Republican primaries and caucuses has been a decrease in turn -- And in fact it wasn't for independents and some cases it would have been a dramatic decrease is it's what the political insiders are have been calling.
A problem with enthusiasm we refer -- is and -- enthusiasm gap.
And it's been unusually pronounced in the Republican prize but I think the fact that we had Santorum -- going back to early February those three critical states.
Effective -- -- had the -- here and that it looks like a do or dies vapor Romney has increased the attention and turn out today.
-- in addition to that one I would also add that that I think a lot of folks are very cognizant that unemployment in Michigan is one of the highest the United States.
Both Michigan wanna send a message they're very upset about the direction of the country they feel perhaps the leadership hasn't been there in the -- the White House and they want their voices heard and miraculously.
President Obama was in Michigan today not that he's paying any attention to the Republican primary.
But I think it only underscores how important Michigan is not only for -- and Santorum but the president's also keeping a very close science are.
Are you surprised -- White House continues to suggest that this president is paying no attention at all to the Republican race.
Is -- different to the outcome that we have Michael Moore are calling on his good friends of the Democratic Party to vote for Santoro.
Idol I just don't think it's credible partner who would I I'm I'm surprised that to a -- discussing this idea that somehow the White House and pres Obama are paying attention -- they're paying attention.
They may want to say that that the fact that he's there.
It's not only that if the fact that he continues to hammer this idea that he bailed out the auto industry and I might add in the robo calls that you're talking about earlier -- What you see if -- -- -- saying.
-- the other guy oppose the auto bailout without mentioning that he to oppose the auto -- and that's one of the questions on the exit polls that we're going to be getting to here later we're gonna find out how governor Romney is doing and amongst voters to whom obviously -- that was bailouts were important.
Our will be looking at those voters who on their exit polls indicated that it was a very important matter to them.
Santorum clearly intuitively should do far better will be examining that here as well.
This this -- in Arizona 6% of the population there is Mormon I he's doing very well in the advance polling.
What are we expect their communities.
Is there anyway we're Santorum does well enough to be able to at least say I did okay.
While I think -- termed as the need to -- -- -- -- -- -- to say I want.
And if you look at the numbers we look at the demographics it just doesn't point to a Santorum Victor in Arizona tonight.
Not only does Romney have a 6% of them Mormon population that could come out and vote -- He also has the endorsement to governor came -- or he has the endorsement of Senator McCain.
I think is going to be a good night for governor Romney and Arizona a must win for him same as I believe that Michigan is -- must point must went for him.
You've both -- use the expression must win.
It.
Is it really a situation where Romney is now sort of getting hit by the national liberal media.
That is first he has to in his home state now -- now below the language of art amongst the pundits is.
And Santorum has to be defeated decisive -- it's no longer enough that -- be second it has to be a decisive.
Far you know -- Second wife thing is that if you look at them -- the sort of narrative and I'm I'm.
Curious about how you react to this move because you said it's the liberal media but I think conservative media is also said.
You know what Mitt Romney has not close the sale.
-- and that we don't see that conservatives view him as an authentic conservative mother I agree with you -- that.
And secondly I would say.
Then in this sort of this race to be most conservative over in in the Republican Party.
I can't find language amongst any of these -- candidates would that would be more conservative than that.
Of governor Romney himself.
Now the credibility the sincerity.
Those questions are another matter but his language.
And what he's enunciated on issues certainly ranks as amongst the most conservative.
Yeah especially on an issue like immigration and you again I don't.
Think there's any way -- Santorum wins Arizona I've never seen I have yet to see you hold it indicate very easily and people listen to either a distant second.
And when you stop and look at Tea Party people in Arizona there's split.
Now that's interesting to me that it when you look at people on the immigration issue guess what because.
Governor Romney has been hard line on immigration I think -- stake in the heart -- -- and anyone he's doing fine with those voters in the early -- key examples.
While we're gonna find out right here tonight yes one thank you very brother rob thank you.
