Top of the stack that -- Canada political commentator author syndicated columnist politician.

Broadcaster he's done many many things.

It in -- also been the senior advisor to presidents Nixon Ford and Reagan.

He ran for president three times but now.

After writing a book about the decay of America he's been fired from -- one of his recent job so.

What happened -- what does he think about the current Republican candidate joining me now is Pat Buchanan and -- thanks as always good to see ya wanna start if we can with the your views on the Republican race and what do you make of -- this is this is unique it's different than anything we've seen.

Mature as we've -- Romney -- sort of the preemptive front runner at the beginning of the race.

-- -- had six people come up or fibers that -- Donald Trump Michelle Bachmann.

Governor Perry you had Newt get rich.

And yet Herman Cain and has got Rick Santorum.

My guest is Tom that.

That I think Romney basically got their credentials he's got the -- he's got this strength he had a pretty good debate this last week.

I think in the long run he wins -- but he's taken some hits along the way.

-- what it takes some hits but Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton took -- -- -- and obviously.

That did not hurt now President Clinton are -- President Obama -- that was authority has slipped.

Yeah well the president.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama come from a political party.

-- which is quite frankly.

Very much favored by the mainstream media in America and their battle was not as brutal I think it has Republican battle has become.

And of all these attack ads served a lot of people that have a hard feelings toward Mitt Romney who -- out of the race and some of them still in the race.

-- that -- is gonna have to be a great diplomat to pull this party together his negatives have increased I'm not saying it can't be done Tom.

But I think it's going to be an uphill battle for the Republicans as of right now.

Yeah it's interesting to watch -- because we see talking about negatives.

We see because so many people saying that this this is a mess our country's in a mess that's going the wrong direction.

The financial recovery is is is not really -- recovery yet they will some day but certainly is -- yet.

They give all these bad marks to what's going on and yet.

The president gets 50% approval ratings.

Well one reason gifted as the president to likable man I mean.

Even when his approval ratings were down there in the low forty's a clear majority of Americans say they'd like demand.

And they are ready for an alternative and that's the point you're making time.

This country was ready for a change in January I think it's gonna be ready for a change in August.

But Republicans are gonna have to win it.

I think Obama.

Than the nation is not gonna go for the Republicans and -- -- -- it be convinced.

That they offer them something better I think they can do -- I don't think Obama's issue and by any means but I think it's more of an uphill race for the Republicans right now.

Is the economy everything is it is just worked I mean is sealed the James Carville thing about -- the economy stupid.

The economy starting to show some signs of strength but I happen to be in that camp.

I'm still worried about it I still think there's a lot of things that are coming with higher gas prices more foreclosures.

Lot of things that that could send this economy just like in 2011.

Nice start -- the year but it started sliding as we went through is that going to be V item is gonna decide who gets elected.

I think it's going to be a major item on another point if the -- defaulted bring down some of those European banks that will jump the Atlantic.

And it will prevent any recovery and you'll probably see unemployment -- -- up if that happens I think Barack Obama could be eaten beaten fairly easily.

But I do think I do think yes there are other issues cultural and social and moral which I think the Republicans ought not to give up one.

This issue of the Catholic Church -- -- Catholic bishops.

Are predominantly grew up in democratic families I've really seen preaching from the pulpit by the Catholic Church.

Stand look what they're -- -- -- an abomination jobs and we're gonna resist it almost to the point of civil disobedient.

So I think every -- of these issues.

Is a break for the Republican Party if they know how to deal -- that.

And a -- should -- tough intelligent way.

We've also got the Supreme Court sometime in June they're -- is they're gonna talk about obamacare.

Is it constitutional is it not.

Depending upon how they rule will that make for example if they rule is constitutional.

Would that help or hurt the Republicans.

I think it would hurt the Republicans it was ruled constitutional.

But I do think this let's suppose it was ruled unconstitutional.

I think the Republicans then might win a battle a temporary battle.

But Obama can say I was frightened for poor people I was frightened for health care I think he could make that a real issue.

None of these things is really locked in concrete but let me say you've touched on one of the big futures I don't understand for the life of -- Why the Republicans why Mitt Romney doesn't get up and say we've got four outstanding justices on the Supreme Court.

They need one more Scalia one more Alito or one more Roberts -- one more.

Clarence Thomas and we will have the Supreme Court and make that an issue that should issue on which Republicans win.

Nationally deal want a traditionalist conservative court what do you want -- judicial activist court that is a -- for Republicans haven't met.

IR IA I am well boy -- -- into the choir pat are right -- appoint you.

A lot of people forget about that how important.

If when -- content to where I'm not so sure which.

Person I want to vote for Israel which one will point appoint the next Supreme Court justice that I wanna see and that I think it's going to be very very important but listen.

This this argument is also kind of turned into.

The Santorum rom the moral.

Cultural argument vs financial argument.

Which one is is going to win.

I think Santorum has helped himself to this extent he is elevated those issues he's given those folks that don't want Romney and don't like -- A real reason to say look Santorum is different is -- fighting conservative and social and cultural actors.

Where he's hurt himself.

Is his handling of the issue.

Of contraception and the rest of it not keeping -- and to ensure a proper -- battleground in my estimation and I think he's hurt himself.

Being sort of outside the mainstream an appearance a lot of women are unhappy -- -- now I think he's losing some of the women.

I do think this is a tremendous a certain way he has really wait outside -- Santorum has come.

Come in that direction -- -- appear to be in that direction.

And so I think it's.
