And dairy queen just open their 500 franchise store in China in their planning 100 more China locations by the end of this year International Dairy Queen CEO John Boehner.
Just returned from Shanghai -- joins us now so much for joining us we really appreciate it.
Hi Melissa good afternoon.
John I wanna ask you just open your 500 store in China.
We -- T McFarland on earlier in the show -- she reminded me that China.
Doesn't love dairy they've heard it it's the one country where you don't find cheese and everything how they have dairy queen Mary did you have to sort of equate that with a taste of ice cream or how is that then.
Well Melissa dairy -- it's actually been in China for twenty years.
But over the last five to seven years we've experienced tremendous growth.
And believe it or not the Chinese consumer they actually do love ice cream.
And of course they love all the western brands.
So as you know it is actually our largest international growth opportunity.
Within the dairy queen system.
Alison many different.
Well what we try to do is -- we go in all foreign country we try to customize flavors for the local consumer.
Around the world the Oreo blizzard is the number one flavor however in China it is Green -- -- -- and when I was there last week we actually introduced our roads was.
A very unique flavor that the Chinese people actually lots.
Wow that's Green -- -- okay.
Dairy queen appoints is wholly owned by Berkshire Hathaway of course that's Warren Buffett.
-- what is it like working for war and so it is becoming his heat.
It does he call you with ideas and tips -- -- you -- what is life.
By got to tell you Melissa warrant is actually one of the biggest fans of dairy queen.
And warrant is great in terms of our ownership.
Each of the managers -- -- held accountable for protecting not only the Berkshire our brands -- for protecting our own brand in my case dairy queen.
And Warren has been great about a year and a half ago Warren when he was traveling in China actually helped us -- stores 6000.
So to have a great booster like Warren Buffett it's a big advantage to the dairy queen brand.
But is he involved I mean does he talked to about the business.
Well the way Warren has -- set up is warrant is always available.
And he allows each of the managers to determine how we utilize warrant.
So if I need to call warrant or send -- a note.
Believe me here is various -- possible but in terms of managing the business on a day to day basis.
That is what warrant and trust each of its managers to deal.
I wanna ask you because you have you know obviously businesses all around the world you operate in the United States and overseas.
I -- -- play fears sound -- from JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon from earlier this week and then ask you do you agree or disagree on the other side look closer.
This is that America is a great thing.
Yet businesses do something wrong but business is a great thing and we denigrate -- -- -- Washington business like the bad thing but not a confidence booster.
Do you feel like there's this is denigrated out of Washington does it hurt your confidence -- -- deal about how you're treated.
Well I think it's very important that one we have good cooperation with -- political leaders.
Obviously in our business and a restaurant business there is a lot of regulations.
And those regulations are really geared -- protecting consumers.
And -- safety.
So it's very important that leaders and business work with our colleagues and the government to ensure that we do whatever is writes for the consumer.
But is it easier to operate in China I mean do you feel like they want you to have your business grow -- more than they do here in the US of the kind of working -- is -- not the case.
Where is it easier.
Now I actually believe that each country has unique opportunities -- in China or Saudi Arabia another country where where expand in a large way -- here in the US or Canada.
We just need to make sure that we customize our business to each country and then deal with the regulations.
That are present in each country.
So I wouldn't say it's any easier to deal in China actually there are a lot of challenges in China.
In particular protecting trademarks.
That we don't have here in new US.
Right John Gainer thanks so much for coming -- we appreciate it.
Thank you Melissa.
