And health care spending is forcing companies look for many different ways to manage costs -- claimant.
Sitting down -- Humana chairman and CEO Mike McCallister and doubles to discuss the current state of health care -- David you could always break down the chatter here in Davos at the World Economic Forum in two different sections this year it's the Euro zone crisis.
Things like food shortages but there's always a recurring one and that is the health care problems that we all face.
The perfect person to talk about that here is Mike McCallister he's the chairman and CEO of Humana great to have you thanks for having me sitting in this chair yesterday Bill Gates talking about.
Major diseases all kinds of pandemic -- those -- -- issues that we deal with but narrowing the focus to the real problems in America.
And what people talk about here what's the number one issue here facing right now.
-- we have something in common with everyone here regardless of their health care system and that is as employers -- -- whoever's paying health care bills.
The struggling with the fact that chronic illnesses are becoming a much bigger problem they have historically demographics are working against people so people are getting older -- -- If you're an employer you're dealing with productivity losses absenteeism presidency is -- and that sort of -- so.
We put together works that well -- lesser with the WF over the last.
A few years or really Begin to get some traction so I spent a lot of time this week talking about.
Health care work OK then and give me some idea escorted the the -- that you're getting people the first thing you do is give people up and walking so.
We know what causes Elvis's 70% of all health spending is from preventable diseases.
The smoking lack of activity and diet.
And so the first thing -- -- -- you can do is start don't develop developing a culture around -- you know let's just take accountability for our ourselves.
And let's start getting up and get moving find new ways to incentivizing reward people so there's -- things you can do this is very difficult work.
But you know I think employers have a role to play here and basically that's the message -- We're bringing it to the United States we have the government health care plan and now let me go to the Supreme Court that particular yeah being.
Covered by insurance you have to buy insurance mandate where do you think that goes you can get holds up.
I don't know what the court's gonna do its announcement I'm not -- is really all that relevant.
I think the mandate is we cannot that is not gonna really -- -- purpose effectively that was technically.
So in on that particular issue.
And I'm sort of indifference to how that goes I think there's better ways to do -- the -- that are less politically toxic and that we may get a chance to come back and do that differently should they throw it out.
Beyond that we are we to predict what the but the court might do should the onus of paying for health care.
Rest on the shoulders of employers.
Well so it is in the US but that's rare in the rest of the world has largely government funded for health care.
You know we sort -- what we are at this point in the US and and backing -- that is going to be difficulty transition away from what we're doing this Paper we saw that play out over two years.
It was a it was a pretty ugly debate.
So and I think its smaller businesses and midsize businesses there to offer less insurance all the time severity -- -- speaking with their feet they're moving on and having their people go.
Find their own health insurance so there's -- slow sort of diminishing of the employer -- -- anyway.
When this bill is gonna accelerate that are not as part of the debate going forward so.
It's it is it is what it is a good news is employers are actually.
In a good spot actually help because they have aggregation people together there's a relationship there.
I think they can be effective but that we as heavy lifting to to make them.
Will watch it develop thank you so much thanks for having me Mike McCallister is the chairman and CEO of Humana did.
