Republican presidential candidates making their final push in Iowa ahead of Tuesday's caucuses critics -- winning there is no guarantee of getting the nomination.
But it does cut out the definite losers joining me now Fred Barnes executive editor -- weekly standard.
Read welcome back to show great to have you here thanks Jerry.
Well I got to tell yet -- I've been reading your columns.
Thinking about what you have -- say about Iowa it's only four days away now.
Do you think it's gonna be the size has -- anyway this time or is it gonna be yet another example of the Iowa Caucuses not being predictive.
Well it could be a decisive fifth what you know -- is too -- really think that thank you could be important.
If Mitt Romney wins because he's.
Way ahead in New Hampshire and and and would probably -- -- to win there and and when you start with with two in a -- you're off to a pretty good start.
But normally that's not what happens and I was somebody wins and you remember who won the Iowa Caucuses on the Republican side for years ago that was Mike Huckabee.
Then now he's got to show on Fox News last.
Not without some people would consider that went into -- GeMS out so let me ask you about South Carolina -- Because that is a state where the primary really is predicted is that going to be more a turning point in this race.
Well it'll be a big turning point particularly of Romney wins -- a state with a very strong Christian right movement and whether his mormonism will be.
A factor or not I'm not sure but if it's going to be a factor anywhere.
In a negative way that would be South Carolina but if he comes in there with the head of steam.
He might overcome any of that.
Any Mormon feeling and you know what Romney has been pretty solid in the polls not great but all -- he's been in -- been in the twenties.
And while other candidates have gone up and down.
And so -- and at the moment Romney looks pretty good.
A you've written about Ron Paul that his prospects for winning the nomination -- porn.
And yet he's really poured a lot of campaign funds a lot of effort a lot of volunteers and Iowa has -- focused too much on Iowa.
Well you know look if you're.
If you're candidate who -- is not likely to win the nomination.
-- you -- and you want to overcome that you'd be you can focus on I was -- a lot of money there but also spend a lot of time there.
-- Jimmy Carter -- that that democratic nomination in 1976 and I always important for him was first and so you can spend months and months in Iowa.
And this of course what Rick Santorum is done.
This year which is given him a chance to move up enough.
In Iowa Caucuses and maybe come in third fourth.
The good -- something like that which will keep his hopes alive.
Well -- and you look at his radio rating highly in the Iowa Caucuses Romney first.
Paul number two now Ron Paul -- this of one point and really look like he was gonna run away at -- the whole thing why are his numbers dropping now.
-- -- only dropped a little bit and that because he didn't mean by that much.
I think a lot of negative information has come out about him about his newsletters about.
The what -- -- his comments he's made over the years I I think he did poorly explaining his foreign policy and that last debate.
I would ask you about Iran is that you know his comments on Iran did not go way down well essentially is going to be a wise -- -- let him do what they wanna do it there's really nothing.
They have anyway would have an impact on -- a lot of people didn't take them lightly.
No they didn't end I think you have to if you want to vote for Ron Paul only -- -- -- really dyed in the wool isolationist -- some of those and I want mainly Democrats but on the Republican side to.
You have to sort of tolerate.
Some of the craziness in the foreign policy that says if you're talking about.
There's no evidence that Iran is.
A trying to build a nuclear weapon well actually there's a lot of evidence that.
So we're -- is trying to do that.
It seemed -- there's always a last minute person who surges right you have to their eyes on them because you don't know just how far they're gonna go out and you know every -- I look at -- the TV said Rick Santorum is being interviewed by somebody sell more areas.
Is it possible he could take the whole thing.
Well it's possible that he could do very well I doubt if he could take the whole thing but you never know what.
Polls in primary and caucus states are -- Very.
Devices because they're so because people make up their -- at the last moment the moment they're fickle way switch.
The margin for error in these -- is incredible so.
He could do what he's done at the traditional way out not we you know you go to all 99 -- you spent.
Week after week after week there while other candidates like Romney are also campaigning in.
In that South Carolina and then New Hampshire and other states.
And he's done very well all of a sudden it -- About a week ago announced.
Then he's on big -- can't that stay off tale of McAuliffe yeah.
-- -- the other question here which is whether those candidates that are ranks.
At the bottom of the pile will they drop out will -- be dropping out after this contest.
Well the only one of my it is.
Really Michelle Buckman.
If you because she has another option that -- can follow this year she's done.
Doesn't appear likely to win the Republican presidential nomination would -- go back and run for house seat and still be in congress so for her staying in.
-- for a long time probably doesn't make any sense.
Well it got my view on this is that all these candidates are running for -- Seat in the cabinet or -- to some other posts that they would get a pointed tip.
But let's take a look at the national race presidential race right now I don't winds up Romney winning 27%.
In a pretty solid lead here Gingrich number two at 23.
Percent but still I still have -- -- That voters are not entirely happy with this field of candidates.
Is that if you wait too late for anybody else again because let me tell you I'm hearing rumors -- time.
The Indiana governor may be Chris Christie could any and that's still happen.
Jerry don't believe them.
And don't believe the rumors.
I think the candidates who have been talked about the about getting in and certainly Mitch Daniels is one in.
Chris Christie the governor of New Jersey is another Rand Paul Ryan the college of Wisconsin -- Jeb Bush that.
Son of a president brother of another all of the all of those have made firm decisions about not running.
And -- to get in late they'd have sought about.
Really Jerry dealt.
Right and he Jerry rigged if they yeah held -- any kind of can't we mechanism -- money and then so long.
Have we not only have they decided not to get in they still don't want to get in -- about I can't imagine anything that would convince them.
To jump in the race now or even.
In February -- March so I don't believe the rumors although the rumors will continue the no doubt about that.
I well -- it's always a pleasure to have you on the show thanks for coming and we really appreciate the time.
Good always enjoy.
