If you so much -- -- let's turn now to the latest political battle right here at home -- -- -- Mitt Romney neck and neck in the polls tonight one week before the Iowa Caucuses and Newt Gingrich stops swinging to get back on problem for more on the latest and also on the campaign trail that we are joined by Stephen Hayes.
Senior writer for the weekly standard.
Steven let's Begin with.
Do these Iowa Caucuses really matter I mean this is Begin right then.
Yeah I think they certainly will I mean you're gonna have we been talking about them now from month we will be talking about them for the week after Iowa leading into New Hampshire.
They sort of set the stage for the longer run.
They were going to see on the Republican side that could actually last through the summer.
But we still have of the as far as I can see -- -- imported from the disabled getting -- now with Romney and I Gingrich coming into the Frey a little bit com.
Is it seems to me that those accusations about -- racist news letters haven't really -- -- as much as you think they might.
Yes I think that's true we haven't seen that in the Iowa specific polling -- the fallout from a democratic leaning firm.
Public policy polling yesterday that showed Ron Paul continuing to do well.
New poll -- time magazine poll out that suggested he was in the top two.
I have heard by talking to some campaigns that are doing private daily tracking.
That Paul's numbers have been sliding a little bit.
In the past several days the question was always whether the newsletters Dorian and the reporting on that nobody primarily a Washington DC and New York stories of the net.
Consumed the political media here which certainly has.
Or whether it was gonna translated something that people what I we're gonna spent a lot of time talking about are focusing on whether it was it kind of thing.
That could peel away some of those supporters from Ron Paul if these daily tracking polls that are taking place inside at least one campaign.
Are accurate and and a reflection of what's going out maybe there will be some erosion from Ron -- support.
So about Newt Gingrich of weekend Stephen you know he started to come out on the -- little bit we know that those attack had certainly heard him he's talking about -- the Massachusetts moderate.
Was this a good tactic.
Well I think it probably would have been a better tactic had it been doing it all along what happens now I think is it looks it -- a little bit of desperation you know because he was -- -- -- earlier this month if you look at the Gallup tracking poll.
He was as high as 3538%.
According to Gallup December 5 and in that area and now he's he's fallen to about 25% where it looks at least according to that national tracking poll what he's plateaued.
But to see him now would come out and attack more front -- -- It suggests that he's desperate he understands he's losing some ground although I will have to say to be fair to Newt Gingrich.
He has been attacking this whole time.
It just hasn't gotten the attention I mean it took a shot at Mitt Mitt Romney over -- he took a shot -- Mitt Romney or Medicare he's been attacking -- -- -- did so last week.
So it -- yet and gotten it.
Did the kind of attention of the those attacks and because he's been saying he wants to run a positive campaign you know -- -- backed himself into a corner a little -- -- what about the conservative wing of the GOP field and have Rick Santorum.
Rick Perry Michelle Bachmann whether they figure it all this how -- -- how -- doing do you think at this stage.
Well I think conventional wisdom is that there are three tickets that will be punched out of -- I think that conventional wisdom is wrong.
I think there will be four and the question to -- at least has been who's going to be the fourth will -- be -- very Michelle Bachmann or Rick Santorum and I've long thought it would be Rick Santorum.
He identified well with the voters there and in my time and Iowa I've had a number of voters.
Say to me but I really like Rick Santorum I agree with him on the issues but I'm just not sure a lot of support -- what -- vote -- vote for him.
Because I've worried -- throwing away my vote should not vote for somebody who stands a chance to win well now you're seeing Rick Santorum -- surging eleven.
Points in this poll out today up to 16%.
I think if people get the sense in Iowa that he has a chance really to win.
Or at least do very well finish in the top three year finish a strong fourth.
I think you may see a rallying to Rick Santorum because people once they see that he could win tend to agree with -- on the issues he may benefit.
-- be -- see what happens next week in Iowa thank you so much Stephen Hayes a senior writer with the weekly standard thank you so much for joining us any time thank.
