Committee and governor governor Christmas Eric you do you Tom and true Christmas books -- well where's the where's the one for this year.
-- coming up next year I loved Christmas and it and the most fun I ever had my life writing I've written nine books.
But the most -- was writing the -- simple Christmas because it was very non political.
Very personal.
And in the course are writing that book -- really dug up some stuff out of me that I didn't even remember being there really have is pretty.
Little's -- therapy thing it was very cathartic.
It really -- I I thoroughly enjoyed our credit.
And I went back and read there were parts that made me laugh and parts that made me cry and I thought my gosh -- -- this story is still gets to give you wrote it.
You you wonder -- wonder some times.
Where some things come from where you look back at -- one leader shows her book that you Britain and you know.
-- -- -- I come up with that I do and this book was one that -- Thomas writing and I couldn't get it fast enough in too.
With the word process I mean I was just if this -- it was so much fun for -- imperfect.
Well listen let's.
For years ago kept there you word -- around in Iowa than you've been doing it again this year.
But -- throw whole different set of reasons it's funny to them looking back -- Gould.
You know Huckabee -- O and four years ago is I don't know about this guy -- now -- like we'd love him we welcome you back.
So different reception this time -- because you're not a candidate.
It's it's so much more fun going to a place as a non candidate for the simple reason that.
You're not going in in a room full of people who all day long have been told on radio and television what a horrible.
Hideous.
Reprehensible human being you are.
And and you actually go -- -- with.
People.
At forming their opinions -- you from what you have actually said -- written and it's very.
Refreshing to be able to experience that.
So would that be nice to be able to have candidates do that too but yeah four years of four years ago you broke away.
From the -- it was it was Christmas time and you ran an -- the political -- 32 ad that was what really matters.
-- -- -- -- -- It wasn't about politics now it was we had really.
Wrestled with this what do you do Christmas week nobody wants to hear a bunch of political stuff and -- certainly don't wanna go out and say my opponent.
Is a -- on fool peace on earth goodwill to men pass it on I just -- Harley at this season so we talked about it and it was a last minute spur of the moment thing to do this particular spot we were already taping.
Some spots for January we had rented a home of the doctor in Little Rock.
And they're -- their family room had a Christmas tree we move the camera in there sat -- I was not feeling well and I said look guys.
We will have a script for this -- on the teleprompter.
As a county down from thirty seconds I'll hit the time but probably only have and not been me to get this thing done wants -- -- just be ready.
And -- in Moscow -- so it was an impromptu the words were not pre scripted.
And you know they they gave me to -- sign -- -- -- in this red sweater and I was parked in front of the Christmas tree.
And I just say.
At this time of the year when so many people are fighting over things that don't matter.
What really matters is that Christmas is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ -- in your family have a wonderful wonderful Christmas saying go bang that was it.
Controversy all my gosh you'd have thought that -- come out.
For Satan worship.
I mean it's Christmas for -- say yes but the funny and that's what it's about so -- you -- -- you nailed it Chris Maas you know worship with price just before we start you don't week.
And I'd forgotten about -- but there was a huge controversy about a floating cross it was in the background in the background behind me which was obviously something we hadn't thought of because we never planned to shoot.
In that particular room.
It was a bookshelf.
And the -- -- the way it was formed it the angles of a bookshelf it look like to.
The conspiracy -- at the big networks.
That it was a cross and they assume that it was a subliminal message.
I'm thinking I'm talking about Jesus birthday the other civil and all of out of that -- -- -- it was the funniest thing you know what they'll happen.
Tom we ended up getting probably five million dollars worth of free television.
Because we didn't run that spot but a few times in Iowa.
But every network.
In the country and every local station ran that spot over and over with people analyzing it and I remember what us laughing because we'd see some -- -- from Madison avenue six.
-- Robin in the business thirty years -- until you know that was carefully thought through and plan that was not accidental and we think it but we're not that Smart.
Well -- it was Smart enough to where you want Iowa.
Now and end to the good people in Iowa I'd I'd I'd gonna ask a question that may get did you had trouble here or me in trouble.
But I'll -- so we get you in trouble not good at all right now.
I'll I'll change in the making a -- Iowa.
Does Iowa matter because -- FYI SOK because your question you came in number one of them John McCain came in fourth.
So.
But John didn't participate in Iowa and he really focused on New Hampshire.
And he up -- didn't Mitt Romney in New Hampshire which was really that they're death knell to Romney's campaign.
And what happened was I focused Iowa -- -- I didn't think packet when New Hampshire McCain focused in New Hampshire because he didn't think he can win Iowa and never campaign there.
People thought McCain and I -- in collusion that's nonsense he was my opponent not my partner there haven't -- And then that by the time we got the South Carolina it really was coming down the McCain and me as it ended up I came in second and when people say does it matter you -- I would that you didn't -- Yeah I want Iowa but I went on to -- most of the midwest in the south on Super Tuesday secondly.
-- coming in second I prove that I was able to elevate my campaign really out of the dust.
And be a major contender and probably wouldn't of been had to -- not been able to do that.
Because for years ago we talked and at the time I think what -- your biggest concerns was name ID yeah you -- -- now but then you did the -- you or you were having to put it together.
-- people would look.
This spell my name Yahoo! we've had been interviewing and it -- that's very different atmosphere yeah but it made it limits they want matter so for different reasons.
The reason that it matters -- that a candidate.
-- to Iowa is not so much because the voters of Iowa represented a microcosm of America because they probably don't.
But Iowa voters are sophisticated and savvy in this they are not star struck because some guys running for president.
And so a guy goes to Iowa and he goes to a diner are to a farmhouse.
They don't just still cool off take my picture with you and let me east would you sign my buying you know my mom book curve are -- -- -- something.
They'll say hey I wanna ask you sound.
We gonna do about farm prices got you know how you really -- -- to them all my gosh.
They are not impressed at that your running for president in fact I guess in a mall.
That come back CNET and.
-- that I got they have and they have really have been met every presidential candidate forever.
-- did do something I think more were sitting -- we go into January.
Coming up soon -- that Mitt Romney has a lot of money and Newt Gingrich doesn't.
It does it help.
If Newt does well that they won't yield is is it is -- basically get -- -- the F fund -- going better.
Well if he does really well that that definitely won't change response I'm I had a total sixty million dollars in the entire campaign eight of which came.
After Iowa.
In the final.
-- you know what actually since Super Tuesday the final month of the campaign.
Half of the money that are raised any year in four months was raised in the final month.
And all the previous time -- -- only half thinks it's a question is how far it's not it's not a sprint.
That's the thing about Iowa -- out a sprint to Iowa and then exhale yeah that's just the first leg on America that's exactly what it is and that's -- greatest.
Description and I think metaphor that we can -- is for the presidential race it is American marathon it is not a sprint.
And -- problem is not as much money its lack of organization.
He has not been a front -- long enough to -- -- a big grassroots.
Organization.
The grassroots -- -- a certain level money but not all of -- you still have to have a lot of money.
But if you don't have money -- a big grassroots organization that's where you find yourself acknowledge trouble.
Are my friend good -- see you very different agenda and thank you so much for stopping by for those crosses are our some very we've got a big debt -- entrusted.
