The NBA.
Here it is by the numbers just two days away from opening day and two days away from 866 game -- in just under 44 days this after a 161.
Day lockout ended.
With an even split of nearly four billion dollars.
Between the owners and the players in -- -- Ten the NBA make up the ground that it lost during the lock out this is a business story and the former NBA all star Jamal Mashburn joins the program.
Again and dodge volatile it's good to see what what do you think the challenges -- pretty big challenges for the NBA which I'm sure had an image that was damaged during this lock up.
Yet is -- going to be a big challenge I think they lost some of their friends fans as we would say and they really have to go out in.
And really be a part of the community get those fans back by having the superstars of those particular -- some of the big market and small market teams.
Really go lot of community really engage along with coaches and also -- MBA front office off.
I'm sure there's going to be a major marketing plan directed some -- some of those core fans as well as Frenchman.
How do you think the NBA has.
Bid managed but it does not just a -- but over the last few years in terms of how they've been marketed but also how they've conducted their business the NFL gets a lot of credit -- And rightfully so for bringing in some big money especially from television to decide to -- deal and just huge money from the networks.
For television -- read that the NBA deal that they decided that when the economy was just in the pits that they basically gave it away.
That the networks are bringing in tons of money one point three billion dollars -- what's the expectation this season.
But you know the the NBA signed a broadcast deal worth about -- -- thirty million a year so they they they could have had a lot more.
Do you think they need to get that that operation turned around because this sports these -- all about TV deals.
Yet is all about TV deals and all -- -- content at the end of the day I think the MBA.
Has done that's a good job led by David Stern have of really marketing their product in trying to get the best TV deal but it's awfully difficult compete against the NFL.
In my world I think they're king I mean there's only sixteen game so it compared to the to -- NBA season which is 82 indices and 66 so there's a lot of games to go around and a lot of television content but also you know you just have a few big market teams that are really high quality -- some -- small market teams are not going to be competitive so.
This this is tough sell with the smaller market teams and am pretty much top have yet to.
But -- and a short season going a play 66 games so you know it -- small markets rely on the lakers coming to town with Coby.
Once a year were doing twice a year they're out west and they might not get it -- as much as they did in the past which I'm sure hurts business.
Yet does hurt the business and NBA is based upon -- superstars -- I don't look at it based upon -- obviously he put Kobe Bryant on the law on the New Orleans Hornets he would be a big draw on the road so a lot of these small market -- Want to do season ticket packages where you have the lakers.
Coupled with the timberwolves the so that people -- -- the bull packets and attend -- games instead of not going to the timberwolves game and only gone to the Laker game.
Right when there and -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- basketball questions they are gonna play some games this weekend -- a lot of people here -- new Yorker actually relatively excited about the next but that.
The class of the league when you talk about the top tier teams.
Is still the talk about Miami certainly after what that's all the big players that they brought in all Dallas -- it.
Now Kobe apparently is gonna play this weekend the risk is that the wrist is OK so and -- the lakers lost of people but who are you picking who do you like this year in this the shortened season.
Well in -- season I think the Miami -- have the best advantage I think they have three great players in on the brawn James the lane waiting Chris spots but my second tier team in the Eastern Conference will be the Chicago Bulls -- -- an excellent job of going out and get.
Getting Richard Hamilton from Detroit.
And then they have the reigning MVP -- growth yes and out west are still like the Dallas Mavericks.
You gotta be the defending champions in order to crown yourself the champion.
Think there'll be in the hunt along with the lakers but I think Oklahoma City Thunder -- out there in front they have a young team led by Kevin -- and -- Russell Westbrook so I think they'll be exciting and they have defense they have toughness.
And they're young so the 66 game season may play into their favorite because of those young -- Net Kevin Durant and dot Derrick Rose -- certainly two guys that a lot of people would pay to watch.
Data data there if there and -- -- -- -- then -- bull wrapping up it is a pretty good Olympic team this year I would think -- TV -- -- some of those younger guys from London -- -- looking forward -- Be a great Olympic team I mean those guys I mean they've they're gonna run up and down in there's going to be a lot of people watching those gains as well.
Post by Coach K all right Jamal thank you very much Merry Christmas happy new year -- trichet it.
Saying to you have a great want Jamal Mashburn with this NBA season Christmas Day this weekend aren't many retailers to -- Chris.
