Rick Perry is the flavor of the day today trying to get his stuff during campaign for the Republican presidential.
Nomination back on track he reshuffled some of -- -- stopped yesterday.
Today he is a nice seeing his new economic plan a flat tax proposal.
Supposed to be very very simple let me read it to you.
Flat 20% income tax right.
But -- -- also have the option to stay with -- current right.
Raise the retirement -- Social Security set Medicare that it benefits based on income levels.
Closed down corporate loopholes so you cannot have a 5% flat tax rate or you can say exactly as you -- have all the deductions sound simple.
It's supposed to be I don't know -- -- political panel with me here in the studio today.
Michael Benjamin Foreman New York assembly -- Democrat from the 70 ninth district the morning Michael well good afternoon as I guess it is now.
And that NRDC bureau of -- -- senior fellow at the independent.
-- forum and director of policy research at the Winston group clearly a very.
Busy woman so Christian which of these you gonna take a 20% flat tax sort of current rate I don't even understand what he's talking about.
I don't know I'm what are the other thing that is that is proposed is that -- accusing the new rate you ought to be able to file your taxes on a postcard.
I think it may actually wind up causing a little more confusion then Governor Perry giving it credit for.
I think -- you know women would just like you asked you know which reader you gonna file under rather than folks being able to file their taxes simply.
I'm a little concerned that at least at first folks are gonna be having to figure out -- different taxes.
Two different -- the tax returns before they can know just what the lowest amount is that they'd be willing to pay self.
Think she's the simplicity -- that that Governor Perry would would obviously hope that.
Michael I I'm nobody would ever argue that on the smartest guy around but that does not seem simple to me now -- me -- in the public tends to be one -- each other.
And so what's next filing your income tax on a postage stamp now think that that's effective.
It's good to -- more confusing if you want the best of both worlds a flat tax and progressive tax and both seem to be.
Sort of not keeping with the with the -- agenda I think -- he's reaching and I think that they can mistake.
He's making 999 sound much simpler and much more effective and less onerous thing.
Yet crest and this doesn't appear to be the sort of speech I'm proposals.
That will get Rick Perry -- in the in the top tier of the candidates does -- to you.
Not you know I I disagree with that a little bit in it because even though this sounds complicated on face it is still in many ways a lot simpler than the current tax cut.
And particularly the thing that things that Rick Perry's proposing to do is -- corporate tax is.
Step in the right direction it's about bringing our our corporate tax rate down to more internationally competitive levels.
To give companies the ability to bring dollars home from overseas without -- hitting -- tax penalty when they do sell.
So there's some things in this plan they really do think can help get Rick Perry back on the right track.
His campaign -- gotten very distracted recently and he shot up to the top of the polls at the beginning when he was talking about jobs in the economy.
And then his campaign kind of if it became more about immigration or.
Or was Social Security a Ponzi scheme -- -- the Romney campaign to their credit really -- Harry off message and he saw Kerry's numbers just crater.
So this isn't attempt credit Kerry campaign to get him back on message talking about jobs which is something that I think.
His campaign would rightly identify it as one of his strengths that he ought to be talking about.
That that's what this is an attempt to do unfortunately for Rick Perry -- feel like he's almost stepped on this himself.
In that it it it -- it is a lot of pieces all at once so it's gonna lose some of that at punch that 999 had.
And he's also complicated matters by I think it was just yesterday he kind of came out some some statements about -- terrorism.
And you know doubting the birth certificate of Barack Obama I think I -- one of his advisors I would I would absolutely be frustrated right now because that really -- -- important message.
He should be putting out there which is that he's focused on jobs that's where voters are.
And if he was there I think you could see his numbers Begin to rebound.
Talking of his advisors Michael.
He retooled the team to some extent yesterday is that a sign of desperation doesn't really make a difference to a candidate when -- just get a few new -- as.
It's he's camp and expanding he has in mind expanding nobody wants to do hopefully.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Kasikov confusing people always focus while it would be 20% who will be at my current rate -- that muddies the waters from what -- really really wants to do.
And these additional two patients with campaign team and that's enough this distraction but it happens -- -- campaign to make make it stronger candidate.
