President Obama's jobs bill wants to end tax deductions for charitable contributions.
So the question is will this and America's generosity forgiving.
Author of god wants you happy father Johnson -- is here.
A good morning -- The idea that Americans are very generous we care about our neighbors but we like those tax deductions.
To have what would happen if they weren't there.
Well I think there's definitely spirit in America that is about giving.
And so even if there's not a deduction.
Americans are still going to be -- I know that for a fact.
If you have an international charity.
Whether it's written religious based or not you come to United States to get.
Big yes that's -- compared to Europe American is 90%.
Of charitable donations in these international organizations.
It's not the government's responsibility to make -- more -- It's not the government's response we can make us into good people but the government does -- responsibly to order society.
And one way to do that is to make it.
Convenient for people to do what they know they should do of helping a neighbor and that's why these terrible -- options are so important so good and it's going to.
Alter the unites states of America if the government says you know what we're better at this charitable stuff.
Then you private charitable organizations and that's what will happen some of them will fail.
And I I would imagine that religious organizations were probably come out shortest on him because obviously I don't I can't see our government giving money to religious organizations -- they would give it to other.
But the problem -- -- we were just talking in the break 46 million people -- American below the poverty.
Rate right now poverty line.
Who's gonna take care of those towards who is best positioned to take care of those people is a government.
Or is it the local charity church or otherwise would say I -- volatility human -- right so what you.
Argue then the government has actually been too intrusive and in the past it was actually neighbors of actually churches that stuffed up stepped up and took care of their neighborhoods and their neighbors maybe the government will back.
Instead of trying to replace.
We might even see more generosity for.
-- and you get used to receiving them money for free from the government.
It's very hard to get off you have a tough but very tough to get -- to givers and this is that this is a very tough one for conservatives because on one hand they want.
The government out of all of this on the other hand every time.
That and this is my favorite about that the internal revenue code is every time they messed with charitable deduction.
If they make it more generous.
Charitable -- contributions go up every time they tighten or squeeze it charitable contributions go down say what you want but that's what the history said.
Of course and that's why I think that the government needs to stay out of -- closing these loopholes.
The best thing for the United States of America is for us to be more charitable not to the government giving all of our -- -- government that they can do the job for us.
But being charitable to our neighbor which means having eight.
Good motivation or reason to start it charitable -- -- deduction.
Yeah that's my -- don't know what that so a bit but other people are starting up charitable organizations because they know that they're going to be -- -- get your money.
And that is a great motivation for the people who are starting up something big something good in their neighborhood.
-- -- I just think who cares if it's tax deductible -- not make it a 100% deductible at this point people need our help and you know what I think also too.
I don't want to donate to big organizations anymore because I'm afraid I don't know where my money's gone rather give to my local church knowing that.
It could end up to that -- -- in right outside on the front steps and with teachers.
Run out of time but what about the exact opposite notion here we're talking about almost unlimited unemployment benefits is your point were.
We give too much and we've we created.
The -- whether it's a church will be whether it's a government but we're we're actually did trading people who've lost their will go out.
They do girls and of course there is a we know what and a very personal level we know -- and our families will bring needling somebody in their alcohol -- -- -- for a -- -- judgment and at the -- for enabling people that's not surety.
That's not charity what's the line at that's -- but this is the best I think principal.
A higher level of government or society should not do what a lower level of society -- government can do for itself that's the principal.
That's the principal.
Now I I think that we should encourage it not.
Take away edited I'm with you look at you know -- a lot of people -- starting to wonder there's a million people still living in tents and Haiti.
Where did the billions -- -- this is not just that this about fundamentally altering.
The very fabric of the United States when we take away such a big part of who we are and that is that we're going to give of ourselves I agree I think it's a huge mistake.
