Election today in New York city's ninth district.
To replace congressman Anthony -- you remember him.
And I has been solid blue Democrat for -- years the polls show the Republican candidate is up by six points.
Joining me now congressman Michael Graham currently currently New York city's only Republican representative.
Out of fifteen districts.
Like the Maytag repairman.
You're so -- You're absolutely right but I'm hoping that they have to tonight I'm going to have a fellow colleague in New York City.
Sitting by me on the Republican side so we're very hopeful right now.
Let's talk about that we're looking at a picture of the district's right now.
Bob Turner is a -- I don't -- ever run for office before the Republican candidate not very well known -- media guy.
About how is it that He is having such an impact here.
Well.
Actually He I believe He ran against Anthony -- last time -- somewhere around 4142%.
Of the vote.
But I think it's it's several things -- Most profound thing we have to look at is just how democratic this -- is it's been held by Democrats since 1943.
This is Chuck Schumer is old seat while not just Anthony -- old -- so -- is a lot of history there.
And is a 130000.
More Democrats.
In this area of the district of New York City.
Then there are Republicans so.
If turner is able to pull this pull this one out tonight and I think that this is certainly.
A referendum on President Obama and on the administration and certainly the failed policies.
Kind of a canary in a coal mine.
I wish our viewers some numbers here that will kind of bring this all day -- -- here's a poll shows Bob Turner the Republican candidate in this district with 50%.
Of folks supporting him likely voters David weapon with 44%.
The big turnover largely white working class blue collar district and when to show you very opinions hearing annually to comment on this Michael.
-- Barack Obama favorable 43%.
Unfavorable.
54%.
Now I assume this district.
Went for Obama -- -- presidential election correct -- actually President Obama won this district with about 55%.
Of the vote.
And right now 56%.
How -- Americans disapprove of President Obama.
So there's there's no question this is the biggest factor also -- this this area is over 30%.
Jewish voters.
And there's no question that the this this administration's.
Position on Israel has not been as strong as it should be and that's definitely resonating with the community.
Right so -- they're they're also looking at that is very important issue in that district.
How we handle Israel and how we back them up that's fascinating stuff.
Who's gonna take the blame though if this.
C turns over to Republican.
Well I think what they'll do is the Democrats will most likely -- -- -- -- wasn't a strong candidate He made a lot of errors throughout his campaign and they will try to deflect the reality that this is really a referendum on present a bomb in the failed policies at the end of the day everyone knows what every single person especially Staten Island and Brooklyn and Brooklyn and queens tonight whatever -- speaking about around the dinner table.
This speaking about jobs and this is the -- economy and the need to stop the failed policies and give it.
And and move in a direction that makes sense which is creating a friendly business environment again getting back to.
Being the land of opportunity that this country's about letting the entrepreneur -- and those that create jobs to small businesses be the engine that drives our economy and our enemies to get.
And -- went before you go I want to play some sound from Rudy Giuliani the former mayor of New York he's out there on the campaign trail here's what He said.
People in this district get a chance to send a message to President Obama president put out a plan a couple of days ago saying it was saved jobs.
But nobody believed to -- the plan it's just.
-- try to find a nice way to say this warmed over spit.
-- You know it's pretty heated language out there pretty tough race.
If He had to predict right now what's gonna happen what do you see happening.
If I had to make a prediction I see that turner.
Is going to be victorious.
But again it's an extremely democratic area it's going to be tough it comes down to the pull out whichever team has a better pullout operation should win this race.
Are at -- comes down and you get some votes out.
Congressman Graham thanks so much for helping -- that I appreciate it.
Thank you.
