I'm around Douglas Holtz Aiken is with his right now former director of Congressional Budget Office -- -- great to see you on this.

-- I keep saying it's Groundhog -- -- Ambien a little flippant but it's sort of felt like that right.

And this was very much more the same same basic policy focus short term.

Targeted choices dictator from Washington.

Keynesian style stimulus.

No real -- -- two pro growth policy.

No acknowledgment that the large debts and issue and and and the most astonishing moment one -- says this is totally paid for by the way you congress go figure -- out.

Right.

And you know I think -- bothered me the most about it was his urgency data past and He said you know people can't wait another fourteen months in yet for some reason.

We had to -- all summer even here and now we have to wait another two weeks to figure out how it's gonna get paid so.

Little bit of democracy going on.

I mean this the speech was one part policy but let's face it there were there was one part -- campaign politics position himself to run against congress including his democratic colleagues see they can be left behind if necessary.

And saying you know look I need -- a victory for the election let's let's try to get something done here.

And then one part at the end which I thought was.

Quite odd would that classic president Obama's soaring rhetoric but full of false choices about.

All or nothing on regulation on -- -- and spending nothing like the real debate that we -- You know.

It seems to me that we're at a point where no one is governing all they're doing is campaigning.

And that's probably not gonna change between now and the election is it.

Well there's there's one small opportunity I can't -- exceedingly optimistic but we do have this select joint committee.

Tasked with undertaking some deficit reduction that's an opportunity and that means that we could reform entitlement programs.

That means we could tell financial markets Arnold -- we're going to get the spending under control that means we could actually put together pro -- tax reform.

That's the -- -- the bad news is those are large policy objectives that usually require white house leadership and there was nothing in what the president said last night or -- in the years past that would suggest he's up for that task.

Did anything -- you -- I mean you know this new hires tax break extending the unemployment insurance.

And the payroll tax deduction does any of -- work.

So that will mean noticeable but not very much during let's face it payroll tax cuts are are.

A little bit to help but they are temporary and they're not gonna really have a Big Bang.

-- extensions will help those -- -- -- but not the broader economy.

And -- this exceptionally skeptical another 140 billion dollars in shovel ready infrastructure we've seen this movie too many times are really believe it'll it'll happen -- make a difference.

The problem is though He could -- at -- last night -- and said look.

I'm -- -- -- corporate -- we're gonna -- United States and He could have said some really big sweeping things but that's just not him is it I mean.

It somehow have philosophical.

Debate now.

Yeah I mean it.

The one thing I would love to see was an announcement that -- on the his philosophy which says we're going to take health care over economic growth for -- take the Green agenda over economic growth we're gonna -- unions -- growth.

They recognize that.

That didn't work -- that growth wasn't a package it wasn't a bill growth was a philosophy and we needed to get on the right page which we didn't see that instead.

-- song more the same and and I actually.

It was kind of tragic at the end when He got -- -- -- -- could have said you know.

And I'm really gonna pay for He could've taken on entitlements but you know about what -- got in trouble with some people He -- cut domestic discretionary but.

They believe that is economic growth and or He could have admitted wants to raise taxes but that it's tax and spend and that's really what it's about.

Doug you have an opinion piece on foxnews.com.

-- any Easter -- make you more surprised that the politics were so flat.

Why.

There were predictable they were.

You know He He developed this odd sense of urgency demanding that congress give him something anything in the way of a little victory.

Before the election in.

And ended do it He chose some real small -- policies that are -- aren't gonna matter very much so.

The united neither did the soaring rhetoric effectively.

Nor did He call on and on his side it's a rise up and do something large but but probably an -- instead it was some mixture of small -- policy of spot where politics.
