And our next steps doesn't support -- of the Boehner plan and -- likely not support the read plan should it become an option.
-- joining us now democratic congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois good to have you with us congressman.
Thank you so much -- -- -- let's start with the -- what are you surprised that you are in recess right now and that the speaker doesn't apparently have the votes.
I am because they really thought when I spoke to some of my Republican colleagues last night they indicated to me there were about to vote short.
So you know I've been here in nineteen years -- you know you're never too -- short.
You always seem to find two votes.
At any particular time in the congress of the United States though I -- rather surprised that we're not -- it up because.
It seems to be a very.
Well fashioned Republican version of what it is we should do.
Well fashion are you more enthusiastic about senator Reid's proposition.
What actually I'd be more enthusiastic if we went back to kind of Ronald Reagan times when.
You know there were sixty up to 70% new revenues.
-- spending cuts or I was here with.
President Clinton when we did that 1993.
And we did.
Deficit reduction and is about 5050 you know we reduce spending but we also.
Increased revenues I think there's a real harm to the economy if you -- do spending too much it's.
Doesn't allow this the minutes of affect.
Of the federal government to be there and good that I'll tell you -- -- -- It was hardly -- this stimulus effect of the federal government.
You got a one point six trillion dollar deficit.
We have just come out of what is all mobile home -- completely announced and dusted.
I trillion dollar stimulus plan the Federal Reserve is injected two and a half trillion dollars -- the economy.
How much stimulus does it take to create.
Say more than six.
In a thousand -- I guess I guess my point to you Lou would be imagine.
Had it not been for that and I remember -- more than 700 billion dollars in stimulus package Lou you and I both know.
Forty billion dollars of that we're tax.
Decreases.
Which apparently.
Is what they say we should continue to do so.
Look I look back at the last eight years of the that I was here in.
And I said you know I understood Afghanistan I really did and in fundamentally understand Afghanistan when we weren't asked the -- board.
I didn't understand Iraq I thought it was that bad decision but you know what.
We're trillion dollars into Iraq and no one paid for it and you know prescription drugs no one paid for I think it's.
Kind of a little scary.
The spend and ratcheted up nearly two trillion dollars and then all of a sudden they load the thing people that but that the trillion dollars and I'll make before we spent another penny we need to tighten -- -- Let me that they fairer and more honest and more transparent in our process okay.
In so doing what do you know about our plan C which is the latest iteration of fairness.
And transparency on the part of this house -- -- By the way what the details of which none of us know from either the Democrats or the Republican leadership particularly as you know our -- parents in -- -- I'd -- below you know I'm with you on that one.
Right right we do like they're -- immediately the White -- -- -- me president -- -- the -- -- different from Illinois you're so trustworthy right.
And competent at what you do I really wanna share with you my latest led to you can give them that you you should think about getting jealous President Obama is your man no matter what does that you'll be good growth at all and an and then they can come exclusively on this program -- -- insight schools that would add -- I've got to figure out.
You you know that I mean.
I'm quite an outsider where that comes here.
I have my positions I make them clear I'm not part of the whip operation of the Democratic Party leadership never have been.
I have a drumbeat that I listened to and I tried to see consistent with that and honest.
Congressman.
We wish that you were a source for plan C we wish there were complexity that was open and transparent.
Along with you thanks for being here my -- congressman.
