-- -- a point well from the skies to the tracks where the real industry is seeing business juggle our ride along.
I would total halt climbing nearly 3% the first half of this year and thanks to that growing demand to rail industry is.
Actually looking to hire 151000.
People this year.
And hamburger is -- CEO and president of the association of American railroads and he joins me now.
Ed that all of this sounds like a really good knows what are the main -- for the economy.
Well it Charles thanks for having me on I've been watching all of the discussion about bigger decisions being made here in Washington over the next couple of weeks and no one's talking about freight railroad that you are and I I think it's a good thing that balance talking about freight railroad here because while.
All of these other decisions are being made our industry a freight rail industry is busy spending forty cents of every dollar that we -- -- in -- back into our infrastructure so we can continue to move.
That grain and that corn that you were showing earlier in the day out Chicago.
Two West Coast ports to get right to world markets and and that's really.
To answer your question more directly what.
Our industry does we move.
It's about a third of all US exports support.
We move 43%.
Of all freight in America.
And so we are seeing slow but steady growth.
It is stuff better and more robust in some sectors like.
Grain and corn not so -- strong in the in that in the housing sector but but we see slow steady growth that.
Premier Ed you know higher price of all of the rails closely our regular report religiously and I happen to be a big fan -- -- to the last ten years Kansas City Southern -- my personal favorite but.
I did see -- answer mall role which I think is.
Maybe we could say that that's one of the key areas and politics -- audience exactly who exactly would enter Motorola is.
That it was up four point 6% to growth but that was the lowest monthly year over year growth.
Since January of last year so.
Does that go with some of the other people out there who are suggesting the economy may be heading towards somewhat of a double dip or some sort of a dramatic slowdown.
OK well let me just display would intermodal is good point not everybody follows the industry like you.
Intermodal is where the freight railroad in conjunction in partnership with.
Takes the truck trailer or the ocean container and actually takes it off the highway and puts it on the back of a rail car and ship them across the country in fact.
Your viewers might be interested to know that the single largest customer of the freight railroads is United Parcel Service so what ground does for you we do for brown.
And and so -- big intermodal is still strong four point six isn't as as as robust as it used to be.
But but I don't think we see a second dip coming.
It is a still slow but steady growth I think is where where we see it.
And you know its its interest things sorted out sort of -- our our seems like you're thinking out loud that you just hope people look to dentistry from the federal government.
I -- -- -- -- guys put out last month.
You described the industry is creating Green jobs.
Are you afraid of government regulation -- that someone may say you know these guys are successful maybe we can get more money out of them.
There are some who would like to see Ira rates more.
Strictly controlled we are governed and regulated by an agency here inside the government we think the balance is just perfect the way it is now.
We are taking forty cents of every dollar and putting it back into the infrastructure and we think that's what this country needs.
Not another federal program but a private sector program with people.
-- make money the old fashioned way you know we are in it and then we put it back into our infrastructure and of course wanted.
And of course it happen there's no industry rolls up their sleeves quite like the railroad -- and hamburgers CEO of the association of American railroads thank you very much appreciate it.
