So how are Republicans in the -- every -- responding to harsh words from the commander in chief.
Joining me now Republican senator John Barrasso of Wyoming senator welcome back to the show good to see again thanks for having me Jerry.
So -- does it -- to be chat chided by the president and public.
Well he needs to get on the the field -- he likes to sit on the bench and yell at the players on the field.
He has been absolutely missing in action he -- -- debt commission kind of ignored their report they -- the gang of six meeting.
In -- kind of ignore that I wanna see where the president's plan is we are now.
Days since the Democrats in congress have passed.
The president put something forward and that in the magazine the economist called -- -- dishonest.
Budget so I wanna see where the president and his other than just saying hey we gotta raise taxes he's not gonna get eight a blank check for me he's not gonna get a new credit card.
We need to cut the spending it's not about raising -- taxes it's about cutting spending the American people know it.
Well and -- they're both in your corners that's for darn sure.
-- we respond to something the president said in that press conference today here's the president.
That means -- the defense budget while still meeting our security needs.
It means we'll have to tackle entitlements as long as we keep.
Faith with seniors and children with disabilities by maintaining the fundamental security -- Medicare and Medicaid provide.
So what do you make -- that I mean -- a present have a right with that list or is he totally wrong.
Well it's more talk where the action -- -- he actually going to do this when the Republicans came forward with a proposal on.
Even yesterday a bipartisan proposal to take a look at entitlements like Medicare.
Tom Coburn as well as -- Joseph Lieberman brought forth a proposal that really looks -- dealing with that.
The Democrats I don't know never that we have to take a look at this Medicare is the cancer that continues to grow in America.
That is what we need to do in terms of our spending we get a balanced the budget I just came from the senate floor giving us.
Talk about a balanced budget amendment to the constitution.
Either we start balancing the budget or we go broke those -- the two alternatives that we're facing right now Jerry.
Well -- strong words that comparing -- cancer and and the actions in congress but I want to ask you about this because this is really what I think that many of our viewers are thinking about this week.
Could a delay in raising the debt -- are coming to some kind of agreement on how we're gonna do with the budget.
Could that endanger Social Security payments.
Is there going to be a situation where people wake up that first week of August they're looking for the check in their mailbox and it's not there.
I believe this president.
Will say and do anything that will scare the American people.
In a time that is not the right thing to do.
But I do see him using that is a scare tactic Democrats and continue to use Medicare is a scare tactic they will use Social Security as a scare tactic.
No one wants to default.
No one that I know either side -- -- -- wants to default.
Here in in Washington.
What we have to get the spending under control you have nine point 1% unemployment.
The best thing we can do to increase revenue is not raising taxes what those numbers.
It's to actually go out and get this economy going you need a robust and a vibrant economy creating jobs in those new workers those people back working again.
They'll be able to pay taxes from the money that they're earning.
We have so many rules and regulations coming out of Washington in this administration whether it's Environmental Protection Agency or others the cost of energy is way up the.
Right one dollar a gallon higher this hard -- last year.
I understand the problems but he's still -- answer my question what I asked was if there is no agreement by August 2.
Are you concerned the people who put you -- office won't be getting Social Security payments.
They will get their Social Security payments the president will try to scare them to say that they won't.
But the American people will continue to receive your Social Security payments so you feel confident that benefits will continue.
Well I believe the Social Security -- payments will continue but I believe the administration will use it as a scare tactic.
Right and as you said as you said.
-- really respond to something we had it Wall Street Journal reporter John Hilton -- on yesterday and we talked a lot about this issue is you were mentioning before.
At the expense of the entitlement programs here's what John have a -- Host of the government spending is in the entitlement bucket in Medicare Social Security Medicaid.
That's gonna -- that's gonna happen overnight you know again I come back to this point that in the long run that stuff has to get squeezed but you really want to do it.
Overnight on August 3 it would really damage the economy.
Will that conversation -- had about habit how to squeeze as he said the entitlement programs and when does it take place.
-- when you take a look at at Medicare the average couple retiring -- paid in about a 100000 dollars so they really have paid in.
They'll get about 300000 dollars worth of care we can't continue with that.
For ever -- so they you know Vice President Biden was having talks.
And it really did look like it was going anywhere the president wasn't involved finally today he started engaging a little bit this week but the president is.
-- his own Press Secretary Citi leads from behind.
You need a president who's involved is on the field.
Who's part of this there needs to be a Democrat.
In the senate the Democrat right chart why haven't we seen a budget in two years and the last time that it since the last time a budget was passed our national debt -- has gone up.
Trillion dollars it's absolutely -- -- Months well all good points senator we are definitely behind the eight ball but.
I guess from what you're saying you don't think the bigger question of entitlements to be picked up until after August 2.
It should be part of the discussion.
It absolutely should be part of the discussion to get the spending under control you have to take a look at entitlements that's really where the money is.
Amen to that are right senator thanks for helping us out today great to CEO.
