The power of private money over government funding it's made it possible for the University of California Berkeley.
To become obese Cinderella story of the decade at the college World Series.
Cal baseball team program if you did know was set to be eliminated last year due to budget cuts they've.
By the state hundreds of millions of dollars of an accurate or something is a chop the baseball team.
But then the team was saved by private money private financial backers a massive six week private fund raising effort raked in.
Ten million dollars and six weeks keeping the program alive and now they're playing for the college World Series they haven't been at the World Series since 1992.
Still Gordon is a former -- pitcher who swept Friday and to help lead the incredible fundraising program to save it.
He joins me now live from Ferris he's there on vacation -- claimants moneymaker and still what a fascinating story -- lawyer now but he played for the team along time ago.
What got you working up to to raise so much money in such a short period of time how to do it.
This I just couldn't see that we've read face the end of cal baseball those of us who played baseball right now.
Those seven guys -- live cal baseball.
We couldn't stand the end of cal baseball this season we had to make it go on in the future.
So they have been cut about 200 million dollars plus for the entire school for Berkeley by the state because California's we all know what listen -- went to Berkeley and I've also from California was in a total state of disarray.
And and that's fine on the one hand so they decided look we've got to make some cuts.
But then you came in but how did you deal with -- how did you get people during a financial difficulty of the real difficult time.
-- did so much money how did you get the incentives moving.
After that chance -- did reinstate baseball in February.
Not mid February.
I went to see him and he said if you can raise ten million dollars in.
Six weeks by the end of march I will reinstate baseball and I immediately put together a committee of people who really love cal baseball who -- thought.
Could be helpful raising money.
They head of the parents group the current baseball players the former baseball coach Bob a lot of the current baseball coach.
Dave -- there and a whole lot of people who I thought.
Could really be effective and healthy may raise ten million dollars.
Everybody was given in a signed letter to everybody followed up we had meetings every week we had conference calls a few times a week.
We talked to all the people out there who we thought would be generous to help -- baseball.
And all of a sudden in March it started steam rolling and first we had a million and then two million and then.
We put together some matching gifts that amounted to about four million more dollars and then we're on our way you know.
Amazing to me for years hundreds of millions of dollars coming into the school and the team didn't do so well and then suddenly the private money comes in.
And to -- it's amazing another in the -- college World Series of baseball in Omaha Nebraska they've won their first couple of games tonight they play again 7 PM I think all the hot times are eastern.
The point being.
Can you say that in a -- it's so interesting that when money was just coming in from the state from a government they didn't really win and then suddenly the incentive when their actual private should.
Shareholders so to speak that's the term my friend -- gets sick who also -- cal.
A lot who raise some money for you had had used to solicit got a bunch of shareholders in the team and in the teens psychologically.
Corrected that it it was just that miraculous -- it all worked out I think that.
People who supported cal baseball were sort of complacent.
And the program was complacent in this -- jump started us and everybody got so excited.
About the prospect that saving cal baseball when they realize that -- baseball would be.
Done this year as soon as our team lost any of these game.
I know you'll be watching from Paris on whatever you can get whatever satellite system good luck and analysts felt a big thank you to you for saving the team but.
Really showing the private money sometimes inspires.
Better than maybe state money -- it's.
Good to see you here is certainly welcome when people care people can do it a great point -- -- we.
